Are you kidding me! Medicine is an art? Medicine is a science.

I do agree that sometimes Dr's have to make decisions based upon the facts presented to them & these may not always be 100% accurate, but the appendix is one of the most common & basic procedures. Any Dr should know beyond a shadow of a doubt whether to remove it or not.

I would prefer the dr perform more tests. Its not too hard for a qualified Dr to tell if a patients appendix is about to burst.

You guiys do what you want but for me there is no room for mistakes when it comes to my body.

It is uneducated people like yourself who make potential doctors like myself scared out of our wits about our future profession.


Science is something that can be proven factually time after time. *NOTHING* in medicine proves to be true _every_single time. Medicine is "practiced" by applying the best knowledge that is available today to be symptoms that are presented. As scary as it is, medicine is usually nothing more than a glorified educated guess. Why do you think doctors go through 12 years of training? To properly school them in the art of medicine and the way it is practiced.

An "honest mistake" that SHOULD NOT be tolerated is cutting off the wrong leg. An "honest mistake" in which there is no blame is taking out an appendix after shower all the classic signs and symptoms of a problem.

Ive heard all about insurance rates going up in the medical field because of the ridiculous amounts of rediculous medical malpractice lawsuits. The doctor is going to pass his insurance costs on to you so I would recommend you think twice before attacking the guy who was just doing what he thought was best to save your life.

Some doctors pay more in insurance than half of the population makes in a year.

There has been legislation for a long time about capping the amount of payouts in malpractice suits to $300,000. While this is DEFINITELY NOT a good piece of legislation (some people's medical bills alone can amount to more than that, not including personal cost), something has got to be done to stop the ridiculous malpractice suits.

My point is that science is something that can be proven consistently. For example, if you mix A with B, you get C, 2+2=4, aluminum is a metal, etc.

Art is something that is subjective and changes over time. Art is not something that can be proven quantitatively or even at all.

Utilization of the legal system is our freedom, and with in that freedom few will take advantages, not unlike some freedoms in the Netherlands. In addition, if I'm not mistaken, the US has the best healthcare system in the world. So with that said, sit back, take some notes, learn something, and reflect on our moral differences (US opposed to The Netherlands). Law is a business first, sadly, and justice comes second. But there could be worse things, like Peak Oil (I'm sure you've seen the thread). Focus your energy on something useful, and wish Mike a quick recovery.

The Dutch healthcare is far from perfect, but I don't think it's any better or worse than in the US.

Now that's the main difference between the Netherlands' legal system and the US'. Here it's justice first, money later. Not every single case, and sentences are way too light, but I think it's a better system. Mind you, coming from someone who is also in strong disagreement of the current government. I'm not even slightly patriotistic.

Nope, not at all. I recently visited and truly enjoyed that aspect. I do not view that as a probelm at all.
Although, durring my visit to Amsterdam I was approached my countless addicts... mind you NOT pot smokers!.... begging for money. Now I live in NYC and yrs ago we had the same problem, but no longer. In Amsterdam I was offered more "hard drugs" than anywhere I have ever been, and I have done a good share of travel.
