Explain your board

No picture, but I'll add in my description. I'm in an indie rock band with some synth/electro tendencies

Turbo Tuner - It tunes

MXR Bass Octave Deluxe - I use it primarily to thicken up some parts here and there.

Barber LTD SR - This is my light overdrive when I need a little bite to my tone. It works great when I'm using a pick and want a little grind

Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie B - This is the over the top fuzz that I use in a song

HBE Psilocybe - This is my only modulation, but I figured out a while ago I'm not really a Flange or Chorus guy. This is for spacy parts to add a little depth

MXR Carbon Copy - Mostly outros and intros. I have it set primarily for a short delays with a lot of feedback.

Boss LS-2 - This is the end of the chain, but I play a DSI Evolver Keyboard so I use this to blend the bass signal with the synth to go into my amp.

I recently did a little video demonstration of my pedal board setup... check it out!

thet video iz choice ey bro :D

careful though, otherwise next thing you'll know us aussie will be claiming you as one of us like we did with crowded house, split enz, russel crowe (before he through the phone) and evermore (before the last album) lol

im in a church band we play everything
i use a gnx3 acoustic stimulator preset for slower songs
i use envlope filter for fast songs where i want a harsh pick effect w/out picking
i use delay for hard solos i can't play fast enough
fuzz is great for hard rock/metal
ds1 distortion is great where i can't play powerhouse like
ce5 chorus is awesome for funky offbeat stuff
vibrato is sweet on slower stuff
the list goes on and on Gnx3 got it all!!!!!!!!!!!!:bassist:

Bass > [sfx]Microthumpinator
In to Loopmaster (4)
1 = Boss OC-2 > EHX Enigma Q Balls
2 = EBS Multicomp > Source Audio Multiwave Pro Distortion (using Moog EP-2)
3 = Boss LS-2 (In Bypass/Mix Mode)
A = Clean line (I also have a Boss Flange and EQ here)
B = Devi Ever Ruiner > OK > DB (Fuzz)
4 = Boss CEB-3 > Pigtronix EP-1 > Protone Low Gear
Out from Loopmaster > Ernie Ball JR Volume Pedal > Mockingbird Delay
Tuner out from VP goes to a Boss TU-2 for quick tuning
Out to Amp

I pretty much grouped things as best I could in a fashion that would allow for proper placement.

I would post a pic, but I outgrew my homegrown board and it looks like hell atm. Time to make another.

I find myself playing a lot of distorted/synthy riffs and lines with my board lately. I also find myself unplugging from my board and playing direct into my amp as well.

That being said, I find my effects to be incredibly versatile.

I'm running:

Bass>
Boss OC-2>
Pigtronix OFO (is or ion)>
EHX Bassballs NYC>
Pigtronix EP-1, EXP rate, EXP sweep, Sidechain trigger from OFO clean out contains a Boss TU-8.

<Amp

DSC00017.png

I'm using the sidechain trigger on my EP-1 to track my dynamics with fuzz and bassballs filter sweep.

That OFO can really snarl and it can add a lot of amazing colour, but I find the sound coming straight from my bass to be incredible...and coloured by the bypasses or cables in my line.

It's no big deal...and a great excuse to challenge myself.

OC-2, clean 9 o'clock, Oct 1 full >OFO Octava Level 4 o'clock, filter 5 o'clock...awesome enormous layered analog synthesis.

+ LFO phaser? Sold my BMS.

+ EF inverted Phaser? Stopped thinking about getting a keyboard.

(that's just me...for now this is doing just fine for me)

OFO mid-scoop fuzz gain to zero and level 4 o'clock, overdrive gain 9 o'clock level 1 o'clock? fantastic definition with a rich OD.

OC-2 + OFO Overdrive - memories of Radiohead

What do I use the bassballs for? very low sensitivity setting vowel overtones, seating my tone in a different spot for choruses, bridges, or short passages...or as a subtle tone to bypass for choruses, bridges, and quiet passages...or dicking around with for fun alone at home.

Certainly a useful and versatile board (the EP-1 and OFO both bring a huge range of tone to my palette). I would really like to get a few more tools...compressor, LS-2, Thumpnator, buffer, DI, Fueltank, EQ, looper, etc. but it's not really essential right now.

Wish I could do it and keep my board relatively small...but doubt I could without starting from scratch with different units which won't be happening.

Chain is:
AB2> Wah> Deltalab Rock Distortion> Line 6 envelope filter> Line 6 compressor> EH memory toy> MXR EQ> Akai Unibass> Boss bass chorus> MXR Bass DI+.

The AB2 also goes to a tuner and acts a s a mute when I'm changing basses.

The wah is for textures and general wanking and funkiness.

The Rock Distortion is set for a very oversaturated sound, very fuzzy with lots of sustain.

The filter gets used for funky stuff. Not the best filter ever, kind of hard to get it to cut through. But works well if I kick in the EQ, which is currently set to boost highs. If I have the Rock Distortion in as well it turns into a very fuzzy synth sound.

The compressor is always on, balances the string to string response on my 6 string basses. Also adds a bit of punch.

The Memory Toy I have set to a somewhat longer delay time, I'm guessing around 500ms. I use it with volume swells (and sometimes chorus and filter) to mimic strings and synths. I'm planning on getting a Micro Pog to further enhance this with octaves.

The EQ is set right now to add highs. I'll use it on certain songs to get a bit of "pick sound", or to help other effects cut through better. When I had a Fender Jazz I set it to add some low mids to better match it to my active basses.

The Unibass. Rhythm guitar in a box. Set to Octave up with distortion, modify switch adds a 5th above. For filling out the sound during guitar solos, and adding extra oomph for heavier songs, usually during choruses.

The Boss Chorus is set to a low depth and slow speed. Kind of subtle, more noticeable when I'm playing chords higher up. Also sounds pretty interesting with the Unibass on.

The MXR DI+ is always on, with the color switch engaged. I send my signal to the house before my amp, so I generally run my amp pretty flat. Very seldom does the soundman have to do anything to my signal. This is on purpose. Soundmen like me very, very much:). I use the dirty channel to add a bit of grit, not really a full on distortion, more a slight overdrive.

There's a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+ under the second tier powering the whole thing.

I'll bite.

I'm 90% doing session work and subbing for others in very various contexts (from metal to jazz to kiddie bands to whatever)

Basses are all active ones which makes some pedals somewhat difficult to impossible to use.

Bass
LS-2 (loop for the entire board - not all pedals are TB and suck a little volume)
TU-2
SYB-3 (set to #3: a sweeping synth pad)
Octabass
Little Big Muff (probably the weakest pedal in the setup now, I haven't found a fuzz that really hit me with my active basses - wooly mammoth had the sound but fixed gain killed me)
Enigma Q-Balls (seriously deep pedal. every knob is related to every other knob)
Bass Cry-Baby (after the fuzz to get sweeping synth tones)
SansAmp PBDDI (preset #1: medium ampeg, preset #2: 70ies bass-shy, mid-driven grunt, preset #3: nasty disto, kind of Muse-Time is running out)
M9 (newest pedal in the bunch. I wanted to buy a DL-4 but this does so much more in about the same footprint. The exp pedal on the right is connected to that. Still learning useful stuff in there. The looper is great, some dirt models as well, the whammy is excellent, phase90 rocks, delays, DimD, Studio EQ, Studio comp,...)
CE-2B (once in a while 80ies bass sound)

The PTPro gets people's attention when I arrive at a band I've never met for subbing, but I tend to not use the pedals as effects (you engage a pedal and people turn their heads like "what was that?") - more to enhance whatever I'm playing.

Tuner and Sansamp preset #1 get most use.

Stuff to check out:
More M9 fiddling, I have an old (black) bassballs which I might throw back in and I still haven't gotten around to adjusting the disto gain inside the Enigma.

The board allows tons of flexability, as I can use full on death distortion, multiple filters and synth patches, and stacked distortion/filter/synth groups.

I have a few pedals that need added to the board, but for the most part, I am satisfied. I am going to change the ordering to split up the Animato from the rest of the distortion for kicks.

Updated Picture coming after practice tomorrow night. Actual board set up is a little bit different now.

photo-6.jpg

I use the Gemini Drive and the SFT for distortion (duh). I originally got the SFT for a kind of "always on" low-gain distortion, and while it does this very well, I find that it is an extremely noisy pedal even at low gain settings. I'm not sure if it is going to stay for too much longer if it can't keep the noise down...or I'll just set it for ultra distortion and then the noise won't matter.

In between the two distortions (which may change places with each other depending on whether or not the SFT wants to behave) is my new EHX Ring Thing (not pictured). I just got this pedal and have only played with it a little bit, but I'm already thinking of a ton of uses for this thing! From ethereal tone-scapes to ridiculous pitch shifting. I can't wait to bring this thing to band practice tomorrow!

The swollen pickle is DOOM DOOM DOOM....obliteration. I think that I am going to add either a musket v2 or a pickle pie b sometime in the near future. I like that the MkII is super deep and bass-y, but its almost too subterranean, like its only really good for over the top obese ultra fuzz.

MXR Phase 90 with the EVH chip installed. I like this pedal, and I like it alot more than my guitard's stock Phase 90. I really want to try a whetstone or a small stone though...

I use the RV-3 in conjunction with my volume pedal for reverb filled volume swells and quite parts, where the bass needs to sit back in the mix. I only really use it on the upper strings of my 6er.

Boss DD-7. I have it set for quick, short delay with multiple repeats. I use it for tapping parts mainly, and texture-scapes with the Ring Thing. I also mainly got this delay over the Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai because I could make this one oscillate really easily and I like to do that when the muse descends......

Tuner = Self explanatory.

Out to Amp.

I actually use an EBS ValveDrive (not shown) as the first item, for gain boost and a little overdrive. Then into the Xotic Wet-Dry X-Blender as all the other effects are blended with the dry signal. I don't like how it sounds without at least some of the dry bass sound in there.

POG2 - I use this a fair amount. I play in a 4 person band with female lead singer so only guitar-bass-drums for instruments (although I double with a harp in a holder sometimes). The POG2 lets me have an organ type sound when the guitarist is soloing, otherwise we can sound a little thin. I also use octave-up sometimes for a percussive sound on some picked songs.

EBS Unichorus - don't use it a huge amount, but on a couple of originals and other rock songs, for intros.

EBS Reverb - use in a few songs when I can't bring an upright bass - try to get that sound on BG.

EBS Compressor - I compress the effects signal a little before it goes back into the wet-dry blender. It makes the effects as a whole more subtle.

I clicked on this thread thinking it said "Explain your beard."

<- Disappointed

I think that question would be valid for about 70% of today's bass effects users. In fact, just about everybody in the "pedalboards of the stars" thread ought to explain their beard.

An inability to grow a beard was my major reason for not buying an Emperor 2x15 cab. :atoz:

jealous of all these crazy boards. ive switched over to bass from guitar recently so my 'board' consists of a second hand boss ODB-3 > < concentrating on a better bass and gigging amp before going crazy on pedals, but i wouldnt mind an mxr bass blowtorch, or better that tasty multiwave distortion from the first pic *drool*

Ignore all the settings, anyone who actually cared.

Pulp Mill: I'm actually seeling it because I've got no use for it at all. Great Compressor, i've just realised that subtle is not my thing.

XP-100: For woo-woo noises and the occasional justin chancellor impression. I actually mainly use it for envelope filter patch set heel down, gives a great round bassy thump tone.

The OC-2, ls-2, slap bass, turbo rat, mastotron and 105q are in the feed back loop for various reasons.

The dirt pedals are in the ls-2 loop for a clean blend. The oc-2 is in the loop because I use it mostly with dirt, so I don't have to tap dance to turn everything on.

The 105q is in the bypass loop because it's a tonesucking whore.

OC-2 I use mostly with direct on full and oct1 on 2/3's with dirt for an awesome sound. I occasionaly use it with oct1 full and direct off, and play an octave higher for a really synthy sound.

The Slap Bass is a weird pedal, it has a really unique sound, basically turns any bass into a clanky overdiven Jazz Bass, very snappy attack. I use it for "light" OD, still heavy and gainy, just less so than the

Turbo Rat and Mastotron Turbo rat set heavy and slightly scooped, mastotron set "gated" (it's not actually a gate but it pretty much is one) for a very heavy but tight synthy fuzz.

The 105q gets used occasionaly

Groove Regulator Use it with the Mastotron and Turbo Rat combo with octave for ultimate synthy goodness. Gets used as a proper filter occasionaly too.

HBE Psilocybe Is for a very slow swirl, as a regular phaser, or a very trippy vibrato sort of sound

DD-20 Is my swiss army knife, delay, headphone amp, reverb, tremolo, poor mans arrpegiator, sound effects, tone shaping, wouldn't be without it.

Pretty happy with this setup for now, I've arrived here mostly through trial error, my ultimate goal is to have one of each effect, i've been through a few distortions, filters etc, but I'm happy with what i've got, now I just need more effects, always more.

At the moment I'm just bedroom noodling, uni is too much work for a band atm, less classtime next year so I might get something going. Mostly practicing (playing along to muse songs mostly, hey it's fun and I can use the whole board), my housemate just started playing drums so we've been jamming a little, but he has only been playing a couple of months.

Mostly playing weird noisey post/ambient/experimental prog rock, oceansize mogwai etc.

As for explaining my beard:

Chicks love it.

my board is kind of boring by comparison, but it does the job. i double on upright, so i've got two x2 wirelesses (the cheapos), and the upright wireless goes into an old alesis micro eq and into one channel of a morley aby. then the out of the morley goes to a micro pog (used mostly for octave up 8 string simulation but occasional octave down, though i hate it and will probably be getting an oc-2), a vt for noticeable overdrive, and a putnam-modded british for light dirt. i use no effects with the upright, though.

when the vt deluxe finally comes out, i'll be ditching at least the micro eq, aby and vt.

Wow... I was already feeling inadequate with all these huge boards with lopers and midi controls and bizarre switching/routing options.
I clicked on this thread thinking it said "Explain your beard."

<- Disappointed
Then I read this and felt doubly inadequate since I had to shave last week. :(

As for my board...
IMGP2736.jpg

Its been this pretty consistantly for a while.

Into a compressor because I play sloppily and I like a little squish most of the time.

Then the boost/drive which is pretty much my essential pedal. Clean boost to light drive to pretty heavy diode clipped distortion. I can keep up with volume changes with the boost, filling spots that are light on guitar with the drive, and flatten small structures with both together.

... and the ring mod is there because it does stupid sounds that don't make sense, and a decent tremolo. I tried a ton of pedals in that spot... way more than I should have, but I just couldn't find something that I could use without sounding horrible and forced. Filters, phasers, flangers, chorus, more drives... and tremolo was pretty much all that worked, so I went with trem/ringmod.
