Double Bass Extended E string; The Game

Here again. Need some opinions.

I have a big orchestral bass that I play arcobwith a huge bow. Need a low extended E string that’s both tight, bright, and precite (lol precise I couldn’t help myself). Right now I’ve got a flat chromesteel and I love the immediate bow response plus the tone that I get. I hate the lack of volume and rumble that I get. I believe it’s because it’s a very slack string. I have a spiro extended e string which might be better, but before I go out and get the drill, I would love to hear people opinions. How to make the string tension higher (looked all over, doesn’t look possible) or if I should be looking at a different string entirely.

I play all orchestral stuff. Hit me hard with the toughest thickest starkest strings you think would be better.

Permanent long E might be nice. IME I’ve found it to have a big, warm yet clear sound.

Spirocore. Try the one you have. Even tighter is the superflexible long C

Spiro c’s create palpable sonic booms. Especially, the orchestral gauge. I have an orchestra c, mittel a and obligato d and g. I love this combo for the orchestral, chamber, avant, folk, and jazz that I play. Definitely check out the Spiro E otherwise I’d recommend checking out an original flexicore c. Good luck in the search.

Ok... intersting but if it works then thats what counts. Throw the spirocore medium on before spending more money.

FYI, loudest playing I have ever heard was with flat-chromesteel.

On a sidenote, loud has no value in an orchestra if it is not classy. You also need to have good pitch and response when playing very soft.

I had the same experience as Phil with my bass. The Permanent extended E added a lot of volume and punch to its low notes.

No but I know a lot of cats like the passione starks more than the mediums.

I am thinking of changing my bel canto for a spirocore if the colors will mix. The low C is a little floppy, but its nice when the string is just an E.

I do, its a great string. Comparable to belcantos but lighter. My issue with them was that even though they were starks, they still felt like light-medium strings. Although they had a nice tone, they didn't do much in the way of volume for me. This may be the way I play.

I have three basses, an 1850's blockless Tyrolean with a low B extension, my 5er, and a solo bass, and on all 3 I had similar results.

I use a full extension set of Passione Starks and besides liking the way they play and sound, I get lots of positive feedback from other string players.
