i don't care about compensation, but credit would have been cool - i obviously contributed -something- of value since it's in use - i mean, it is based on the sidewinder body style, so it's not like i came up with the whole thing, just the upper horn. would be hawt to get some kind of credit for that though. :hmm:

then again, the string gauges on the sit-made conklin strings are different from the sr2000 ones because i told him my gauges and how much better they work. no credit there either. :hmm:

Ouch.

wow, he actually named the body style? that's a trip. Invalid Link Removed. he actually wasn't too keen on it to start with - he told me he thought it reminded him of a one of prince's guitars.

Yep, giving some kind of credit would be the right thing.
Either incorporating your name or initials, or putting “(Inspired by John Turner)” or something like that.
Maybe if you talked to (Bill?), they would realize the oversight.
I guess the point is there shouldn’t be a need to remind them.

With Bud Lecompte, if a customer only requests a variation from one of his standard body designs, he renames it with the customer’s Initials.
Examples on this page:[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I design the “BK7” from scratch, but it was heavily influenced by Bud’s “P4t”.
Still, he is always quick to give me credit (or maybe blame? :D).
Bud even asked my permission to apply a variation of my unique preamp setup onto a different bass.
In my mind the idea isn’t that unique, and I have no legal claim, but it surely demonstrates his character!

i also was the first one to have a conklin rack-mount unit that controlled the volume and pan of the piezos on each string of one of my basses. bill dickens eventually had a 7 made the same way. that was my idea too. heh. :hmm: -shrug-. oh well, i love my basses, and i guess that's all that matters.

:atoz:

That sucks, man. A few of my small ideas like the integrated thumbrest on the Rob Allen were nicely credited to me. I'm not a paid endorsing artist, but there's always THAT pride. Any successful concepts were for the sole purpose of sharing with the bass community, but I'm legitimately surprised you weren't at least given the credit, which is a definite bummer.

mine's going to be more of a worker than a showman, so no fancy stuff. also didn't have the money to go for "the works". its a no-top satin-finished swamp ash body.

i find it insane that you think the standard zon electronics are not aggressive enough. is yours using jazz pickups or soaps?

Soaps!!! It sounds ok but I like a bit more aggressive tone It gets lost sometimes. Good jazz tone but I have to play another bass for the Metal,Funk etc. I have a friend that put an a regular bartolini pre amp in his and it really made a difference. not the ZP2 that is in it now. Dont get me wrong I like my Zons they are quality guitars.

Thanks for the # Pointbass! Have a great weekend, y'all:hyper:

A pleasure to join!

I'm not sure if I should open a new thread for this so...
Does anyone know a ..."cheap" luthier that will make me a 8-string (single course) fretless bass? I love Listerud and Jerzy Drozd's basses, but Jerzy's are way too expensive and I don't know the pricings for Listerud. My budget would be around 1500~1700 € (2100~2350 USD). If it's even cheaper, better. I'm not looking for a boutique high-end bass like Alembic, even Warwicks and MM are too expensive for me lol (I've thought about de-fretting a Galveston UB-8000, but I don't like lined fretless)

TIA.

Perhaps a bare bones Stambaugh might be close to that price, but hard to say how cheap, yet playable, you can go. The neck really needs to be relatively thin, very rigid, and balanced. Sure, Krappy could probably make something fretless and with 8 strings, but not sure how much you'd enjoy it.

Also, if you're not aware, the unwound steel strings tend to have a very different sound and dynamic on a fretless. I'm not bashing the idea of an 8 string fretless, but I can't say that the unwound strings sound particularly good to me.

I just checked it:
Bolt-on:
7 string- $2500.00
That's a bit off of my range :D
But hard to say how cheap, yet playable, you can go. The neck really needs to be relatively thin, very rigid, and balanced.
I know... I may have been lucky, my HK 7-string was just 390 € and I haven't noticed neckdive, neither it's too heavy (5'5 kgs, 12 pounds, and I am really thin and feeble!), so I can get accostumed to bad situations ;)
Sure, Krappy could probably make something fretless and with 8 strings, but not sure how much you'd enjoy it.
I've thought about it, but the policy of Krappy is that they don't have warranty by any means. If it brokes, even if it's their fault, they don't care, so... also most of their instrument are ridicolously funny-looking.
Also, if you're not aware, the unwound steel strings tend to have a very different sound and dynamic on a fretless. I'm not bashing the idea of an 8 string fretless, but I can't say that the unwound strings sound particularly good to me.
My F string is plain unwound and it's not a problem, and Conklin makes a wound F string (roundwound, not flat, though), and the tuning would be from F# to F, not B to Bb.

I was thinking of something like this

Anyway, thanks very much for your help!

As long as you're aware of the sound. It's just not for me.

Anyway, Stambaugh is a tad over your budget, but why not wait and save a bit so you can get something killer? I may be a little biased as a Stambaugh owner, but his basses are well worth the wait and price. The options may be a little bare bones, but he won't skimp on the quality, which most would to keep them affordable.

I don't save up a little more because I'm just a teenager, and in my zone, the economical situation is really f**ked-up. Therefore, my parents won't let me spend THAT MUCH in a bass, my plan was to work this summer cleaning pools with my brother, and he doesn't think I'll earn anything more.

But thanks, I guess I'll have to save up, Stembaughs look and sound really nice!

When times are tough, blowing money on a bass or other luxury items is far from a good idea. As a teen, you have minimal income. When you're an adult, you have income but also bills. Regardless, there's always the chance of unexpected and big bills.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea for a teen to have such good gear, but realize that you may change your tastes a little or perhaps a lot. I'd say mine changed lot because I was a guitarist well before I picked up bass. If you told me my main basses would be boutique basses by companies I've never heard of, I would have been very surprised.

Totally understand your point, because of that, I always look for the cheapest option possible. I don't want a chunk of wood with 8 strings on it, but something "decent". I want to spend the least possible because my parents already do too much for me.

Even if you're not saying that, it's a bad idea :D I studied and played sax for five years (kinda forced to do it...) and now I'm sure ERB bass is my voice (I went straight from a 4 string to a 7, never played even a 5) and not any other instrument matches me (maybe bass clarinet, I've always liked it), but that's not an excuse to spend such amount of money in a "pleasure item". But I wouldn't have known before either! Two years before I started playing bass I didn't know the difference beetween a guitar and a bass. God, I believed Fieldy's clickety-click sound was their drumset!

Anyway, these are just conjetures, I may not earn any money, or anything. But I definitely get it. Anyway, I'm not the kind of guy that begins playing bass on a custom made Fender worth 4000 $, I wouldn't buy anything I'm not up to.
