extension cab help

Hi guys, You might have seen some of my other threads, regarding 8" speakers and stuff. I have reached a dead end in my thoughts and planning, and im hoping you guys might have some ideas.

I have a peavey 1516, 1x5 & 2x8 cab, on top of which sits a 8ru rack with power amp, pod etc. I was planning on building a small cab to sit on top of this, mainly to give me some sound at ear level, and also to increase the onstage wank value. I was toying with the idea of a 2x8 enclosure, but due to the difficulty in finding suitable and affordable drivers in Australia im having second thoughts about that. I then wen onto the idea of a 1x10 or 1x12 with a horn, which might be more affordable. I am planning on getting a little alto 1ru amp to power the top cab, which will pretty much be just running highs, from about 450hz up. I guess if I can get the cab to 4 ohms or 8ohms thats cool, and maybe with or without a horn. I want the cab to be 19" wide to fit in with the look of the stack. My biggest problem is finding speakers for cheap enough to justify to the financier (wife).

Im am open to any ideas, and would also love to hear any feedback on similar projects. I think the 1x10 is going to be most affordable, but let me know your thoughts.

Regards.

Mark

It would help to know what you consider affordable. Most of us don't know what is available in Australia. Can you buy Eminence speakers (as an example) there through an Australian dealer? Eminence sells an 8" midrange driver that would suit your needs for reproducing above 450 Hz. The cost in North America is pretty good. What extra cost is there if ordering something from a mail order company in the US, such as Carvin? I know that most gear available there is considerably more expensive than it is in North America. Beyond that I don't have much of an idea.

Here in Canada we can buy most brands available in the US through Canadian distributors. The prices are higher of course, due to the difference in the dollar, shipping charges and brokerage fees, but items which sell in larger numbers are less expensive than the more esoteric products.

Thanks for the reply.

Ive looked into eminence and such speakers, they are not too expensive. Im just wondering what peoples opinions of different cabinets are for my situation. ie. do I go a 2x8 or a 1x10 with horn... I am siding towards a ported one by 10, but yeah, if anyone has any suggestions id love to hear.

Thanks again guys.

If it's just 450 Hz and up I'd go with the 2X8" setup. You wouldn't need much in the way of an enclosure for that since it's not getting any lows. Just a small sealed box. You could build something yourself or have someone do it fairly inexpensively. Look at the Eminence midrange speaker line.
