I just want to point out that introvert is not the same as shy. This is a very common misconception. An introvert doesn't have to be a shy person at all. A shy person will be uncomfortable in many (or even most) social settings. An introvert can enjoy being surrounded by people in social settings, but may feel exhausted afterward. An extrovert will feel energized by this. Introverts generally need more "me time" to avoid emotional exhaustion.
Introvert/extrovert isn't about being shy/outgoing but whether you feel drained or energized after social settings with lots of people. This could even be after normal day at work.
Shy/outgoing and introvert/extrovert are two completely different things.
A person can be:
-A shy introvert.
-An outgoing introvert.
-A shy extrovert.
-An outgoing extrovert.
A shy person would have difficulties with performing on a stage. An outgoing introvert would not have a problem with this at all, but may feel more drained afterwards than an extrovert.
Introverts do tend to spend more time alone, or prefer the company of smaller groups of people. Not because they're shy, but because larger groups of people can make them feel exhausted.

There's extroverted behavior and then there's crass behavior. In this instance, Hetfield is just displaying the latter IMO.

I'm leaning towards an outgoing introvert myself. But of course, this isn't either/or. It's a gradual scale. People with a balance of introvert and extrovert traits are known as ambiverts.
The timing seems to be a bit off.

I doubt many frontmen are, but it's more likely to be a characteristic of bass players who aren't also vocalists.
A lot people would comment that it's Rock & Roll & then there are some who would say it's Heavy Metal.
or perhaps even Punk Rock, as Crass seemed to be one of the founding principles
Having played in all those genres, I think the crassness you're speaking about was deliberate and intended to be taken as a symbol of rebellion or an act of protest.
With Hetfield, I think it's more a matter of attention seeking and crassness for the sake of crassness in this particular instance. And that sort of thing has gotten pretty old IMO. But maybe that's just me.

Hetfield? How should I know? He's definitely not shy, but it's hard to say whether he's an introvert/extrovert without knowing him personally. Even then it can be difficult sometimes.
If you're on tour with the same band over a longer period of time you start to notice certain behavioral patterns though. Some band members (like myself) will reach a point where they need a break from spending every single waking moment surrounded by other people. I played with a drummer for more than a decade who was an EXTREME introvert. He wasn't a shy person at all, and generally a very friendly, laid-back character, but if he didn't get enough "me time" all hell would break loose.
I don't seem to be an introvert. Nor do I seem to be an extrovert.
Therefore, I must be a pervert!
I don't know what somebody's ashes going into a tattoo have to do with being an introvert or extrovert.
I'll add to discussion, though, Lemmy has been dead for a while. They were just sitting on his ashes and Hetfield decided just recently to do up a tattoo with those ashes?
I don't much care about anything else, just a weird thing to sit on this whole time and then to go out about it publicly.

There are probably a lot of shows on that we can pretend don't exist.
Sadder still is that some of those shows have a real band, which we should be supporting.
