Yes. There are two species, both commonly called redwood. One is the world's largest living species; the other is the world's most massive (almost as tall, but wider so more volume). Not sure if both of them become "redwood lumber," I'm thinking probably both.

The third "redwood" is the Dawn Redwood, native to China, and not so large. Not used as lumber. A beautiful tree, though.

1. Giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum)

2. Coast sequioa (Sequoia sempervirens)

These two trees have very different and distinct bark: giant sequoia bark looks a bit more "mottled", while redwood has long, columnar bark.
Got both growing in the vicinity and it's noticeably different. Can't say that I've ever seen giant sequoia lumber, but plenty of redwood.

Ok, I'll post a few. I just got this from an 82 year old man that cut and dried this years ago. He had a land clearing business and small sawmill for 40 years in Northern Cal, and southern Oregon. Whenever he pushed up interesting stuff, such as buckeye burl, madrone burl, myrtlewood, claro walnut, and redwood, he would put it to the side and cut it up. He moved to Louisiana in 1973 and brought all that stuff with him when he came. It has been stored in 9 old school buses ever since. Check this out one of the buses was Jim Jones's original church bus.....you know the cult leader. I've got a pic somewhere around here I'll try and post it later.
Anyway, I've moved the first trailor load over and there is some truly amazing stuff and alot of junk too, but here are a few shots of the a few of the redwood burl slabs.
