f bass design help

so i've been thinking of adding a nice wood veneer or clear style pickguard to my f bass.

i love the look of the fodera nyc empire basses with the PU cover and half PG.

so with this in mind, because the bass is so plain i thought it would spice her up a lil

what do u think? like a cocobolo or bubinga (something reddish to immitate a tortoise shell guard)

and maybe a black PU cover on the front?

if someone could photoshop something like this that would be great too..
i'm trying to keep the lines of that fodera PG, i think its a great shape and has great functionality.

thoughts guys?

too many people messin' with too many basses that are nice already. That's why the collector's market is what it is- not enough instruments hang around in their original state.

If somebody has the need to add something because of function, i.e. a ramp or something, that is another issue. But for purely cosmetics..........?

If you are going for a Jazz inspired/shaped pickguard, I don't think it will work. The lower horn is too rounded to have the pickguard extend onto it. That being the case, I don't think it would look that good.

I agree with Smallmouth. This is one bass that just wasn't made to have a pg. It's bound to look awkward no matter how you slice it.

That's a nice bass as is. If you want to spice it up, maybe go for different wood pickup covers instead if possible.

Not black, but dark reddish brown maybe. Redwood burl, bubinga, chechen, etc.

Maybe that means swapping in fresh pickups. Mr. F could probably help you out with that no doubt.

The neck install cuts quite deep, you won't be able to cover it up with a pickguard and it'll look quite awkward if you do. I wouldn't touch it, but then again, its not my bass.

thats a cool idea, but i dunno..reminds me of country music. i likr paisley though

since u are good with photo shop, could u add a tortoise pickguard and black pickup cover like the fodera onto the f bass?

If you are going to get a mod done to your F Bass, please get a professional to do it. A home hack-job on that bass would be heresy!

if i get it done, since i live in hamilton i will have THE f BASS shop complete the task. they are 10 mins from my house.

or,

i know another GREAT luthier who i'm sure could help no problem. he has matched control plates for me and did my inlay on my studio model bass in the past.

I don't think that kind of pg would look good on that bass. At any rate, I think the luthier who would do the job, could direct you well methinks. If pickguard is a must, I'd go for a rick shaped, clear pickguard.

Or...why don't you design "your own" shape and have a custom thing made?...just a thought

No harm in doing that,
just don't screw it in but use double sided tape.
Make any mod reversable and no harm can ever be done.
