Fact or fiction? Transporting a cab lying down is bad for the speaker cones??

I am the guy who owns the van so carry the PA when we need one as well as my bass rig. Never had any speaker issues at all. I always put the PA speakers face down so that I can stack other stuff on top of them. My Berg NV cabs always go on their sides, which when you think about it is logically no different to standing them up. Been doing things this way for thirty odd years and as I say, never a single problem.
 
Not as old as many that seem to come back from the grave like so many zombies..

On topic.... with all the comments regarding gravity and sag I suspect some inventive sort will come out with a speaker bra to keep them riding high and perky no matter your transport preference. An advanced design could make your 2X10 cabinet look like it's sporting a pair of 15's!
 
Its non- issue. There may be weird speakers out there that are affected by it, but none of the ones we come into contact with are.

The surround and spider would have to be deteriorated or damaged for this to be a problem.

The only actual case I've ever heard of where the transport process itself caused damage to any drivers was with a touring company losing a number of horn-loaded HF compression drivers. Their cabinets were modded to be paired face-to-face for transport, and that action of mating them together apparently caused a brief pulse of high air pressure that bottomed out some diaphragms. Certain cabinets were prone to these failures and some seemed immune; a system tech discovered that the cabinets with the hardier drivers were the older ones, and they had a shunt coil (low R at DC, high Z at high freqs) across the compression driver--the identical compression drivers in the newer cabs had no shunt coil and they suffered repeated failures. The tech obtained a quantity of appropriate coils and soldered them as a shunt to each compression driver, and these failures ceased to be a problem. (This is similar to the principle of damping the needle movement of a D'Arsonval meter by shorting its terminals, reducing the likelihood of damage when it's being carried around.)

This is probably the worst that could happen. You'll have to ask UPS about that one...
 
How would the magnet cause force on the cone while travelling? Isn't the magnet attached to the metal frame of the speaker - so unless it comes of it actually shouldn't affect the cone? I was under the impression that without current passing through the speaker the magnet shouldn't affect the cone... Is that incorrect?

Sort of, the magnet just does not physically touch the cone(voice coil)
