At least some of the pics of Teemuk's post seem to show evidence of a bad tube.... another appears to show a failed capacitor.... Pretty much all are pics of amps old enough to have age-related issues with some parts, particularly capacitors.
And, NEW tubes, which very likely are in those amps these days, are nowhere near the reliability of the old ones.
In the old days the best tubes you would ever get were the ones in the product when you bought it. The ones sold as replacements were just the ones no manufacturer wanted to use as original equipment. Yet they were still "good", they just had parameters that were outside the range the manufacturers wanted.
These days, as I know, we bought tens of thousands of tubes, whole shipments of tubes may have problems. One shipment we got would fail in two minutes if you cranked up the amp. We did manage to fix those, since a manufacturing step to "burn off" contaminants had been left off, and we could simply do that ourselves.
But others have all sorts of problems, bad welds inside, loose mica that can let tube elements touch, etc. new tubes have crappy quality control compared to the old days, mostly because the total market for tubes is really so small, but old production methods and QC were always oriented to very large volume production.
Dunno about "managing to get tubes to fail".... most of the older amps of all makes were made pretty cheaply, but the SVTs, for instance, were pretty darn solid and original ones are still working now, 45 years later. Even though the old units of all makes were often made cheaply, they held up well enough for a lot of them to still be around.....
It is probably more that old circuits which need good tubes, and newer less well-made tubes don't always mix well.
