Failing Eden Problem

Note that the above video clips are relevant only to the World Tour (WT-500, 600, 800) and Traveler (WT-300, 400) series amps that were built before redesign of the power section to allow for 2 ohm operation. The latest generation of Eden amps do not appear to be susceptible to this problem.

i re-soldered my connections, which lasted for a few months, but then those connections melted. So I found an amp repair guy, who was also a bass player, and he fixed it. Said it was a design flaw with the amp and he mounted the resistors so the problem should never come back.

I even bought an ashdown mag 600 during the eden's downtime, but that only made me want to get the eden fixed faster...
 
The 5-watt resistors are adequate, it's the solder joint that is the problem. Replacing the 5-watt resistors with 10-watt resistors is over-kill, in my opinion. Not only that, but if anything else does fail it can lead to more serious problems if the resistors continue to pass (too much) current. So it's kind of a trade-off. You can beef up the resistors, but that can magnify other problems. An automotive analogy would be beefing up a transmission, only to find that the drive shaft u-joints can't take the increased torque. Of course, you'd only find that out under extreme conditions, like drag racing (or slapping, to bring it back to the world of bass).

Only use rosin core solder
Solder that has some silver content has a higher melting point than rosin core. To do the job right, you should remove the old solder and re-solder using a silver-solder. The only problem here is the higher melting point may require a better-quality soldering tool than using regular lead-tin solder. Once the 5-watt resistors are re-soldered using solder with silver in it, you should never have to worry about that particular sort of failure again.
 
I hope you can solve the problem easily. I had 2 Highwayman Wt-500s that worked great for years. They where never abused, actually they were babied, but they both started developing the same problems. From no sound to distorted sound, a multitude of problems, that is why I carried 2 I never trusted one once the problems started. Changed resistors, the techs thought there was probably a problem with a "solder Joint" or connection that they just couldn't isolate. I switched to Galien-Kruger I don't miss the Eden's at all. Personally, I wouldn't mess with the design of my amp, so I would just have them resoldered. Replacing them with 10W resistors, as someone mentioned above, seems like a good idea though.
