From what I read that's not what would have happened. The ejection system also blows off the canopy which is a separate system from the electric lock and release mechanism that failed. You can google the incident, but one of the options proposed by the designer of the plane was to use the ejection system. Additionally if you look at the pilots seat, it is higher than the pilot itself. I understand that this is so the seat can break through the canopy in an ejection even if the canopy isn't blown off correctly without causing serious injury to the pilot.Right, but if the canopy was stuck in place then he would have rocket-propelled his head straight into the canopy.
