Fake Chinese Rickenbackers

How many of these threads about fake Chinese Rics are there going to be?

Word. From some digging I've done on these, I've heard they are made by Douglas. I make no claims to know too much when it comes to Asian basses of the 'lawsuit' era or any other aside from MIJ's.(Have played an Ibanez Ric copy, and it was ok). Douglas I believe was making stuff for Guild, and some the old Guild stuff was ok, If it's the same folks, I kinda doubt it, but it might be. As has been said if you want a Ric, save and buy a Ric...I rarely play mine but don't regret buying it...but I'm pretty much Jazz or P Bass guy. The only knock off Ric I'd consider might be the Ibanez and merely for history.

The finish esp. on the blue one is beautiful, but has to be quite illegal. Also looks like a glued in neck joint? For about the same money you can get a Kona thru neck 5 string. If they have problems with real Rickenbacker necks, what kind of problems might you have with these? Also, notice on the natural finish one, the bridge is a Fender clone, nothing like a Ric one

Ive actually bought a fake rickenbacker from one of these Chinese sites. Cost me £260 inc P+P which is crazy. OK... It aint up to real Ric standards, theres tell tales signs its fake, it needed a good set up.....

But for those of us who dont have £2.500 spare for a lefty ric, Its bloody good!!

Pick ups are pretty decent on it, fairly solid made instrument. for the price, im beyond happy with it. Even if it was a pile of turd... for £260, its not like im really losing much on it.

Anyway... bought it from here The Top Guitars Company - Wholesale Guitars From China. No minimum. Shipped to the uk within a week, cleared customs in a day!

These days many products may be assembled in a particular country but, with exceptions, many small, often electronic parts, are made in china. I have a Rick bass bought new in 1973 and I would never consider a cop, clone or fake. Firstly, a fake is illegal and contravenes the patent laws. Others have minimal differences to the real instrument design to avoid the patent controversy and thirdly, most are made of inferior materials.
The idea that Rickenbacker 5 & 6 string types could be produced by Chinese factories because Rickenbacker do not produce them is a bit of a liberty and is cashing in on a design which is protected by a patent - just the same as music is covered by copyright.
There, I've said my piece. It is based on International patent rights. Must check out if an individual can build an exact copy/clone for own use without infringing the patent.

You got ripped off man - they built it backwards!!!

They're definitely fake, I actually saw some exactly like them in China (probably not the same manufacturer as the one you're looking at, but fake Rics are more popular than I expected). There's no way a Ric would sell for $300! Having said that, I tried one in China and it was better than I expected, but there were telltale signs it was fake and it wasn't all that well put together (sounded alright, though). It depends- I think it would be a waste of money to get one, but it's up to you.
