I'm hoping you can enlighten me here before I think I'm heading into Idiotsville. I've just spent the last two hours going over tunes in our bands setlist, and I discover I play better on my Peavey T20 than I do my Rick 4001. I feel more fluid, more ideas hit me, just smoother overall. I gig primarily w/the Rick; people notice when you have one, and, let's face it, it's sexy as hell.

I started on the T20 about 20 yrs ago, and I have to say I'm partial to maple necks & fretboards. Just a "feel" thing. The Rick has better action, more tonal versatility, yet I feel "bound up wound up" on it vs. just kicking it w/the Peavey.

There is no rational explanation I can come up with for this. The T20 has about 3 times the string height, and buzzes like hell above the 14 fret. The super ferrite pickup is hot, it's louder than the Rick, and more sustain. Anyone who's had a T40 will vouch for that.

I'm in to your observations. Anyone feel like a better driver when they take the Fairmont out rather than the 'Vette? Is it even possible? Should I take my master plan even further, and get a Hondo??

Could this be it? Just that the the t20 feels like "home" because of the amount of time you have put in on it?

I got the Rick less than 2 years afterward, although I did gig w/my first T20 extensively. This new T20 I picked up for $100 bucks last year and still feels "easier" than the Rick, although it's not nearly what I remember the first one being. This latest has a nice bow in the neck, the action is higher than hell, but I still crank on it better, at least I think so.

Do you have a bass issue similar to this?

I have this same issue with my Ric, and all my basses! Sometimes I feel like ideas and playing just come easier on other instruments. I say give it some time and accept the instrument rotation.

It seems like, at least for me, that it's a cyclic thing. One day you might pick up your Ric and play something you wouldn't have even thought of playing on your other instrument and visa versa. (Happens to me all the time. )
