I'm not in full agreement with this. He was great, but he was a much more conventional player and Bob played more like a jazz pianist comping in much of their music. Many of the licks that we associate with them were actually Bob. I saw the band from 1976 to 1994 and never saw him have an off night, although I think the peak of his creativity was possibly '72-74. And listen to the Live/DEAD Dark Star. Weir is really the glue that holds it all together.

And then consider his compositional contributions. Most of the big jam vehicles were Bob's and he had a lot more adventurous harmonic things going on.
