I love everything about the way Dennis Crouch plays. I seriously love the way he sounds. Some day I will have a gut setup. That’s coming.Dennis Crouch and Travis Book are two of the more contemporary players I always learn something from.
I’m wanting to hear some Edgar, but don’t know where to start “”Bluegrass” wise, any suggestions?I'm not really current with who's who in the new generation of bluegrass bassists. Being in Massachusetts I've seen a number of "Berklee bluegrass" bands the last few years and most of the bassists have serious legit chops, even using the bow often!
I guess Paul Kowert is one of the few newer guys I've actually seen whose name I remembered. He's a monster.
I was blown away by Ethan Jodziewicz (pronounced "yo-JEH-vits") who I've seen performing with Sierra Hull and Darol Anger, but he's not really playing bluegrass. For that matter, I've long been crazy about Edgar Meyer but he's not really a bluegrass guy either.
Tom Gray of Seldom Scene had a big impact on me when I first heard him forty years ago. Also from that same era, Todd Phillips and Mark Schatz. They caught my ears simply by being in groups I was seeing and on records I was listening to. They raised the bar the way the kids coming out of Berklee are today.
Also check the Goat Rodeo CD. Comes with a very interesting DVD. Yo Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Christ Thile and Edgar. Nothing bluegrass specific, just really interesting music.Invalid Link Removed A lot of it is out of print. Just check the names of his collaborators: Bela, Grisman, Chris Thile, Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas. None of it is straight grass, most of it is newgrass with some jazz and classical elements. Skip, Hop and Wobble with Jerry Douglas (still in print) and Telluride Sessions by Strength In Numbers (Bela, Sam Bush, O'Connor, Jerry Douglas...long out of print) are the closest to bluegrass and both are on Spotify.
