Favorite Five-String Passive Bass

Hot dang that Warwick Star is a pretty bass. It just screams, "Worshipping God on the streets of gold." I could see myself rocking that in church. Buuuuuut, it's got a pickup selector switch, which is almost a deal breaker for me. I might keep it in mind, though. It sure is pretty.

@mark: what did that Valenti 50's tele P set you back? If you don't mind my asking. I emailed Nino, but who knows how long it will take to hear back, and patience is not one of my stronger suits.

Very nice and relevant to my situation. I have a 1505 coming my way and the reviews on the stock preamp are a mixed bag. It's nice to know I have a passive option which would put it in the same ballpark as your 1005. I'm more pumped about the MFD pickup.

It does have two volumes, so you could just leave the switch in the middle position and never touch it.

If you are looking for something different and all passive, a Dingwall ABZ or Afterburner I would fit the bill.

I briefly had a Roscoe Beck 5 and it was a great sounding bass. I sold it because it weighed too much for me and the neck was chunkier than I would have liked.

I 2nd the ABZ option. and the Warwick Std passive is nice too.

FWIW, I love, love, loved my G&L 2500 active. It was incredibly powerful but clean. Blew the pants (volume wise) off of every bass I have ever played. It just wasn't what I wanted at the time. But I thought the stock preamp totally killed. I didn't like it as much passive.

My favorite passive 5-string bass is a fernandes gravity 5x. I've recently purchased one from the fernandes guitar shop and it is a pretty solid bass guitar. it's got a nice punchy sound and it sounds totally awesome with my effects. I plan to get a fernandes gravity 4x sometime soon for different tunings. I totally dig passive bass guitars with jazz-styled pick-ups.

Thank goodness my 5-string "GAS" was cured when I discovered that a rounder neck radius (e.g. 9.5") on my American Standard P 5's is like butter in my hands. Eliminates almost all other high end manufacturers. This, plus the light weight, zero neck dive, comfortable string spacing (to my hands), great tone (no more constant EQ'ing of my amp), reasonable cost, versatility with any genre, and timelessness make it a perfect passive instrument for my tastes.
