To break it down by decade is pointless. Some people’s careers spanned a lifetime, some just for years(sometimes cut tragically short). The eternal, for me, would be Sinatra, Cash, Presley(in spite of him being such a mess at the end), Little Richard, Jagger, James Brown, Tina Turner, Peter Wolf, Iggy, Bowie, Joe Strummer(for his passion), Kate Bush, Sharon Jones, Leonard Cohen(I’m not kidding, I saw him toward the end, it was transcendent in its own way, he had the audience enraptured), Steve Marriott, Richard Thompson, Hendrix, Otis Redding, Russ Mael…recently, Amy Taylor of Amyl and the Sniffers, Anna Von Hausswolff….then some of my favorite vocalists aren’t necessarily the best entertainers, and vice versa.
