Yeah, John was a great rhythm player, Paul was ... Sir Paul, kind of iconic on bass.

One that comes to mind is P-Nut and Tim Mahoney from 311. There are several 311 songs (at least on their first few albums; I stopped listening to them after Transistor) where P-Nut is more locked in with the guitars than the drums making for some interesting sonic textures.
