Connery is my favorite, he's just a classic badass and that still holds true watching those movies today. Craig comes in at a solid #2, he's extremely good. Prior to seeing Casino Royale I was a little worried that they were going to make Bond into little more of an action brute with no brain, but Craig definitely has the requisite coolness. Not quite to the degree that Connery did, but he's still got it.
I never really cared for Pierce Brosnan, he just seemed too... I guess "slick" is the word I'd use. He came off as kind of a plastic Bond, I didn't really find him believable.

Sean Connery. Period. He's the only one who can the pull the pick-up-women-at-the-bar-perfect-gentleman-chick-magnet-while-being-able-to-turn-around-and-kick-someone's-ass-in-the-same-breath thing.
Daniel Craig just has an air of plausibility to him. Remember, in the beginning Bond was an ex-navy guy who was rough and tumble, and got smoother the older and more practiced he got at being a spy.
I think the last two bond moves are the best... Connery a very close second.

They're all great, IMO. Just how cool do you have to be to get to play James Bond in any of the series?
That said, I think Connery won't ever be beaten in that role, despite wanting to include honourable mentions for at least two of the others.

Daniel Craig is as witty and charming as foot fungus. Brosnan and Dalton were wimps. Moore had the charisma, but was too old and decrepit, physically, for more than half the movies he played Bond in.

I still like Roger Moore because was the Bond I remember from when I was a kid. Daniel Craig?? ugh my wife and her sister are in love with the guy, if I hear his name one more time I'm gonna puke! :
Just the Fleming books. I have nothing against the later works, but I am most interested in Fleming's version since he invented the character. IMO Connery nailed it, down to the "comma of dark hair" that kept falling down above Bond's eye.
First of all, I think that every actor who has played the part was competent. I like how they all brought their own different translations, both physically / body type / looks and acting, to the character.
My personal favorite is Dalton, I think he mixed the suave with the tough. I wish he would have had more and better stories, though I find his first movie to be thoroughly enjoyable. The skiing on the cello case scene is awesome. The last two Moore movies would have been better with Dalton.
I loved Lazenby, again he seemed to mix the suave debonaire Bond with the tough guy.
Connery originally defined the character on screen so it's tough to say exactly what he did best, but it all was good. Every other actor to play the part is by definition measured up to Connery's portrayal.
Brosnan was born to play the character. He was pretty much perfect IMO. Too bad he only got one really good story/script.
There are two Moores. The earlier, rougher, "Live and Let Die" Bond, and the older, more humor oriented "Moonraker" Bond. You can watch the transition. My favorite Moore movie is "Octopussy". The backgammon scene where he pulls out the fake Fabrege egg is perfect. He also was easily the best at delivering the "zingers" which I love (and which unfortuanely seem to have dissapeared - I haven't seen the new movie but from the reviews I'll wait for a rental). "It's not really in the wrist". Classic. I also love where he meets the local Indian BSS agent who plays the Bond theme for the snake on the riverside as a signal. A nod and a wink to the audience. - maybe the next poll should be what's your favorite movie?
It's a shame with Daniel Craig the producers seem to have forgotten what this movie series is supposed to be all about. Craig's bond is my least favorite, for the reason that EagleMoon describes.

I've seen all the Bond movies , at the time of thier original release , so I've been a fan most of my life. Sean Connery is certainly the Classic for the movies . He is probably my favorite all time actor as well.
A few years ago, I finally took the time to read all the books.
They are WAY different , and quite worth the time to read.
From the books perspective , I'd say that Daniel Craig and the two movies with him are much closer to the book.

You know, I like the last two Bond movies more than the rest for the same reason that I like the last two Batman movies far more than the rest for the same reasons: It's the dark and serious tone that I can get into. It's no longer about cheap one-liners and the hot chicks laid out (not that there's anything wrong with that, but it shouldn't be the focus) and package deal explosions.
