I prefer an unpainted fretboard, so maple necks have never been on my radar.
As for PF, i’ve been using MIM Deluxe necks for a number of years and they have always been PF.
I wouldn’t sweat a PF board and if you just can’t deal with the mottled look, dye it black (Stew Mac sells dye specifically for that purpose), but i’ve used rosewood and ebony boards forever and never had issues and the PF boards i’ve been using lately? TBH i can’t feel any difference between my RW MIA j bass necks and my parts basses with MIM PF Deluxe j necks.
