It's a lot better than the trailer made it look.
Yes it is! Even though Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) didn't like the outcome, I'm glad we have it!

Did anybody mention The Who and Quadrephenia? Something really cool about Sting in a Who movie. I hope I didn't misspell the name of the movie!
I'm not trying to be a know-it-all Sheldon Cooper here; everyone is certainly entitled to their own definition of "a musical". And, I respect that...
That said, my definition of a musical is a stage production where the cast occasionally breaks into song. It's fine if it's made into a movie, but it has to have been on a stage first. So... my favorite musical? The Music Man. Period. There are lots of others that I like, and lots of things with music that I like - but don't fit my definition of "a musical". Most of them have been mentioned here already, so no sense re-listing those. Besides, you asked for my favorite; not favorites...

I did sound for a regional theater in NC for a show called ‘Radio Gals’ about a retired school teacher whom is gifted a ‘100 watt super heterodyne radio transmitter’. In the days before the FCC. Hilarity ensues and many great songs are played when her former students and the local handyman decide to soup up her station and soon reach across the nation. If you have contacts at your local theaters, convince them this is worth a look.
I know you said it's a matter of personal opinion, but you're wrong in respect of the accepted usage of the term 'musical'. A musical doesn't have to be on a stage first - I think any reasonable person would consider La La Land or The Umbrellas of Cherbourg to be musicals. Your definition is limiting the term 'musical' to musical theatre. I am sort of proud of the fact that I have never seen a stage Musical. No offense to fans. But I feel that way

One Crazy Summer for me, all day long.
I gave up reading after page 7. I noticed early in the piece someone mention "The Mikado" though strictly speaking anything done by G&S is Operetta. I grew up listening to Fiddler on the Roof. then West Side Story and saw the live CATs show in Darwin which, I must admit, drew me into other Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. Never did really get into Superstar.
