[Walk The Dogs]

Godspell was a student project at Carnegie-Mellon Drama School and conceived as a structured improv piece where actors had to be prepared to respond to whatever their fellow cast members did. In its early days, the cast had a few talented ad libbers and impersonators. For instance, we had Jackie Kennedy/Onassis in the audience one night and one of the actors made a joke about Greeks, then everyone piled on. The show was "sorta like jazz" (h/t Frank Zappa) in that way. Later companies were less creative and stuck to the book so it's good to know that the 2000 company woke up that ethic again.

To bring things back on topic, other than West Side Story my favorite musical score is Mancini's from "Victor/Victoria". I love that musical era. After 15 years on Broadway (hey, I did other things too!), the last thing I want to do is play a freakin' stage musical again. But if I had to it would have to be "Motown".

The part at 0:39 where he stomps his feet while playing the piano still makes me laugh! And the traditional animation still holds up, IMO.

My partner and I cover this in our sets. It's a well written song and always gets a nice reaction, especially if there are kids who've seen the original.

Evita! Evita! Evita! On stage, not the film, Madonna was not my idea of Eva.

I didn't hate Madonna in the film, but I did hate that they give Evita the song "Another Suitcase" as it sets her up as a victim and justifies some of her later behaviour, when it should be sung by the girl she replaces, setting Evita up as ruthless.

It's a major shift in tone, that sets Madonna up as sympathetic, when in the stage version Evita is not in the least.
