Who has an opinion here? Let's here some tracks. I've done alot of DI stuff, mostly with a good 'ole Countryman but I wonder what others have done.

Favorite Preamp for Recording?

There is no "best". There is cheap, pricy, expensive, and stupid expensive. Avoid the cheap stuff. Everything else is useful depending on what instrument and style you're recording.
a DI is not a preamp, and should not really color your sound. The DI is before the preamp. Like i really like going through my radial DI into a neve pre or possibly a DDA preamp.
Ive heard the cheap Art Tube preamps are alright?
Im buying a presonus TubePre and from what ive heard they are really nice, especially after a tube change. Again, something thats cheap.
Ive recorded with my BDDI preamp/DI and i like the dirty tone from that
(just getting the presonus for cleans so i can mix both dirty and clean in at different proportions)Avalon, Retrospec, DWFern, GML, my own custom stuff.. etc, etc. There is just too much out there. What kind of sound are you looking for?? Super clean, smooth, color, punch??

Not looking for anything in particular. Just wondering what others were doing and hoping to hear some sound samples.
I have used an Alembic F-2B and a Demeter 201 for a long time. Lately I've been favoring an Epifani Quest. The Millennia-Media STT-1 and TD-1 are other favorites of mine. The GML and DW Fearn units are very nice, too.
As has been mentioned, a lot will depend on your taste.

A lot of the folks here seem to like the SABDDI for recording. I have used the SABDDI for recording and found that it is kinda OK. Have you ever tried a true preamp?
I've obtained a much clearer, more articulate sound by plugging into my Radial Engineering D2 DI, then to an ART MPA Pro tube microphone preamp. It is then routed to an ART PRO VLA compressor (just a touch of compression) and then into my Edirol DA-2496 interface. This gives me a much more distinct and clearer tone compared to the Sans Amp. I have the programmable Sans Amp but use it live only as an overdrive stomp box.
