Favourite technique

I did a search, but the only other thread like this one is from '03, and this one's a bit more comprehensive.

So, what's your favourite technique and why? Not just the one you use the most, the one you enjoy the most, even if you aren't the best at it.

P.S. By fingerstyle, I mean pieces like "Love Thing" by Stu Hamm, by fast fingerstyle I mean the really fast pieces done by Jaco and Vic Wooten.

Well, I can tell you that I "burned out" on slap a while back. I just got tired of it, and I still am tired of it, although I have no problem with others doing it. Right now I'm 100% fingerstyle and "fast fingerstyle". I've been trying to learn some songs off of Iron Maiden's "Powerslave," for example.

How come you have pick, but not "fast pick (real fast I mean)"?

I just voted fingerstyle. It's the bread and butter of most bass players (the ones that don't use picks, of course), and it's real basic, yet still sounds good. What's not to like?

Everything has its place. My favorite is fingerstyle, but they're all important to know. Except for tapping, which I don't like to do.

I think I tried to slap everything for two years, followed by seven years of fingerstyle with long periods of hiatuses(cars, girls...etc)...

Two years ago, I went to "The Dark Side"

...I still play fingerstyle once in a blue moon, and it's actually cool to convert my fingerstyle licks to pickstyle....the source of many creative discoveries for me...you'd be suprised at how hard a lick can become when trying to do it from one style to another, and do it until both feel just as natural - highly recommended!

I use a pick most 95% of the time, I 've started goofing around with these odd little chord changes and i never like flemco strumming. also i can play faster with a pick. i haven't written off fingerstyle and would like to improve at it as well as slap but i think a pick is always gonna be my main choice

I prefer "raking." I'm not too sure if it's called that. Les Claypool does it a lot.

I find myself having to play fingerstyle most of the time (church worship band and recording), but I prefer "fast fingerstyle" with 4 fingers (index - pinky)...this is my most distinctive technique nowadays...but I'm working on some similar techniques for slap (like slap + triple pops) that ought to yield some nice results after I get them solid.

Oops, it never occured to me. When I think of pick playing, I automatically assume it's quick, because I only use a pick to play fast stuff if I can't quite get the speed with my fingers.

Well fingerstyle is most often used, of course. I enjoy slapping/double thumbing a lot though, I just dont use it in band context much. Its more of solo stuff that i do. I am also getting more into tapping lately.

Anyways, i dont consider wooten(jaco maybe) to be real fast fingerstyle players.. real fast = faster than 180bpm..

Least favourite = Slapping.

I love tapping. I find it entertaining, unique sounding and gives you the opportunity to play like a piano. Just awesome!!!
