Fdeck HPF question..

I recently picked up a series I Fdeck HPF to use in my electric rig, and I'm wondering where is the right place to put it in my chain? I realize that the series III is optimized for EB whereas this series I seems to be geared more towards upright use, per the Fdeck site.

Anyhow.. I play 6 string > pedalboard > puma 900 > EA VL110 (1 or 2). So... before pedalboard? After pedalboard? puma fx loop?

When I used a Series I with electric I usually put it right at the front of the chain. You shouldn't have issues overloading it there unless your bass has a super high output (all of mine are pretty high output and I didn't have any issues, though I could overload it if I put it after my Sadowsky pre and boosted alot of bass). If you're not dealing with alot of heavy gain you might be able to get away with putting it in the FX Loop, but I know I was easily able to overload mine there (though I use high output basses and tend to use alot of gain throughout my whole signal chain!).

Been loving my Series III at the end of my FX chain and haven't had any issues overloading it even with quite a bit of gain before it, but the Series I was still a great tool as I used it.

Nothing crazy. Eq, chorus, delay, reverb, trem. There is a filter and oc2 in there though

I put mine up front on my pedal board. Well, second really. Tuner > HPF PRE > the rest of my board into the amp. The difference between front of the board and end was subtle at home practice levels, a little more apparent at high volume (my fuzz pedals reacted differently). I ended up preferring it up front.

EDIT: However, I don't use any octave pedals. Couldn't hurt to experiment a bit and see what sounds right to you.

Well, I tried it in front of the amp and in front of the pedalboard, for whatever reason I liked it better right in front of the amp. What an amazing little device, it really cleaned up the low end beautifully in a boomy room. I dig it.

Yeah you definitely want to put it after the OC-2 or it won't track as well (and the filter may also behave differently with the HPF before it), and as long as you aren't doing any really dramatic resonant filter stuff that adds alot of gain in the low end it seems like it should be find at the end of that chain. Honestly, even when the Series I does distort it doesn't sound BAD unless you really hit it hard- When I talked to him originally about using one of his HPFs for an electric bass rig (before the Series III existed), he actually told me he designed the Series I to have a fairly pleasant soft clipping to make it pretty forgiving of signal chains for different Double Bass rigs.

Thanks for the info. It was working like a charm at the end of the pedalboard last weekend. I dig it. Just curious of owners: how much variance do you have in your freq setting? I felt like the sweet spot moved around a little depending on different basses and cabs.

I use a II but find myself running it anywhere between 35 and 80 Hz, highly variant on what I'm using it for. I turn it up to 80 to pull a wee bit more out of tube amps running at their clean limits but keep it in the 40-60 range for URB based on the stage and room resonances. With EB the ~65Hz range seems to be the best range for me with a 4 string.
