fdecks HPF, Part II

About the only qualm I have with the HPF 3 is the sequence of the in/out jacks. Makes for some challenging pedalboard wiring. Never thought to reverse them. Thanks for the idea; will look to do that. As for sequence, I prefer the HPF 3 after my pedals to filter out any "useless frequencies" they might add, especially my Octaver.
I just put mine upside down on my board. But I agree the in and out could be reversed.

So...those of you who use distortion with a series 3 HPF, where is the HPF in your chain?
I feel like it should be last, but my compressor is last...

...okay so:
Before or after distortion?
Before or after pre-amp?
or
In amp's effects loop?
or
First (after my tuner)?

It's the very first thing in my signal chain, but at any rate I would put it pre-compressor regardless of where else you put it to reduce pumping.

If you have effects that synthesize sub-octaves, you might want it after that, but otherwise I can't see much benefit to putting it later in the chain.

I prefer it last in my chain -- after the dirt, after the envelope filter, and most of all, after the octave. I had it first before I added the octave, then put it last, and I noticed no effect on my dirt pedals in either place. I have my compressor near the front, after the envelope filter and before the dirt.

The only thing I'd be really concerned about is:

1) the unit being places so as to most effectively 'clean up' whatever lows your signal chain has in it.
2) making sure that whatever signal you're feeding it isn't strong enough to clip the HPF-3. In most cases, most pedals probably don't provide enough voltage to clip it, but you never know.

All your dirt runs through it no problem?
No problem at all! It also showed how much my compressor was being triggered by subsonics I couldn't hear or reproduce anyway, so that was great. My comp doesn't work anywhere near as hard now, and I've actually thought of getting rid of it. Maybe, but we'll see. It's great, so I might just keep if in case I need it later.

I'm inclined to remove my compressor as well. Not sure its really helping me but adding one more variable to screw with me.

1) Is why I picked it up...
2) Interesting statement and something I had not thought about... But that could be with any chain, no?
Using it as the final output of the signal is something I have not messed with much. But it may be one of the things I need to pay attention to. Thinking adjusting the volume down and bit and not lick the VTRM in the teeth. Hmmmm.

31hz graphic eq slider vs HPF

If I have a graphic eq with a 31hz slider how does an HPF differ? Currently I am using a Micro Thumpinator but I am thinking of making a switch to the MXR 10 band eq. This would enable to take 3 pedals off my board and replace it with just the MXR 10 band.

One advantage with the 31hz eq slider is that you can control how many db you cut. I really am only interested in cutting below 30hz (etc) so cutting higher is moot.

Whats the diff between an HPF and a eq slider around 30hz?

The graphic EQ cuts just as much above as below the frequency center, for starters. It also allows a lot of subsonic junk through below the cut band. Wrong tool for your intended purpose.

I have mine first in my chain. I like it there for my semi-hollow body so that the subsonic thumps and thuds don't stress out of my other pedals. I tried it both ways and it seemed cleaner to me that way, but I could be kidding myself ;-)

Regarding the graphic EQ, it depends on the type of filter that bottom option is... mostly likely the fdeck will be way, way more effective and efficient. It's specifically designed for killing those subsonics and graphic EQs aren't (well... almost all graphic EQs aren't I sure there's exceptions).

PS: I have a QF2 multiband distortion peddle in my chain that I use all the time.
