Fearful 12/6 Owners Question

If I were to do my 12/6 nearful over again I would use the Alphalite rather than the 18sound. I had wanted to leave open the option of a sub so went with the 18 Sound driver. However, the 6NM410 has a 8 dB peak at 4 kHz, at least mine does. Not good. It worked out okay with the crossover I ended up with but for a 12/6 I would consider the Alphalite rather than the 6NM410.

IMO the only way the 6NM410 makes sense is in a 12/6/1 with the true 3-way xover. That xover has a band pass on the mid driver that rolls off that peak. However, in doing so it lowers the mid top cut off frequency to 4 kHz. I thought that a bit low for a 12/6 so I went with something else.

The dark line on top is from measured data. The red trace is simulated with the passive xover. dBs are relative.

@SickAura — IMHO, as an 18 sound mid user in 15/6/1, 15/6/1 + 15sub and 15/6/1 + 15/1/6 rigs, one can easily tame the reputedly "wild" 18sound mid driver with EQ, as at least one other respondent has noted. However, since you are not planing on getting into the 12sub or mirror baffle thing, go forth sans 18sound mid and be joyful.

I decided to build a pair of 12/6/1's. Don't need the tweeter but I plan on keeping these for a long time so this way I'll have it if I need it somewhere down the line. Also, a sub can't be used on it's own so I went for a mirror image pair instead.

Alphalites for me. It doesn't seem logical to me to put in a driver that's too powerful (by most opinions) for the sound of the box by itself.

I would build one with an 18sound mid using true three way crossover and have a defeatable pad on the mid tobuse with a sub. The other I would build as a normal 12/6 alpha and have a switch to bypass the mid. That way you could do a 12/6/1 12 sub type stack and have all the different flavors of fearful.

Use the expensive mid if you expect to add a sub - you need the hotter speaker to keep up - or use the cheap one and plan on building a mirror image 12/6 with a second cheap mid if/when you go double woof.

The cheap mid comes in two flavors - the cheaper cheap one is heavier than the alphalite version.

Hi FOZ!!!

Long time no chat.... but with the quote above, what would you build?
12/6/1 x2 mirrored with cheap mids..... or.....
12/6/1 with expensive mid + Sub

Thank you!
