fEARful part 13: the bad luck's done, son

I'm waiting for the FedEx truck to drop off the remainder of my parts from Speaker Hardware for my pair of 15/6s. really looking forward to adding these to the arsenal; it will be great to have some "reference" cabs in the mix.

Thought I would share a pic of my new rig. I sold my beloved Shuttle 6.0 because it did not have the power for my fearful. I wanted more power. I went with a Presonus Studio Channel and a Crown XLS 1000. I have to get used to the eq of the presonus but the amp is beefy enough to really drive the cab. It can get louder than I would need on any gigs I have. Really love the cab.

Enlighten us (me) as the GB Shuttle is rated at 600 watts? OK reading through, 375 watts at 8 ohms (one cab) and the Crown is big power for $300-400?

I had 300 watts running through 2 8 ohm cabs last night in a big room, enough power, no head room left through.

Still, would appreciate more comments.

From my experience and tastes the shuttle 6.0 is too anemic in the lows. You can dial them in, but doing so means you've scooped some of the amp's volume ability. Add to that that IMO the shuttle 6.0 is not what I would call a loud amp (compared to other micros I've owned) I can definitely see how the shuttle 6.0 would not be a great choice for an 8 ohm fEARful. IMHO, YMMV etc.

For my personal taste with the 15/6 I bump the 160 - 200hz slightly and cut the 500-1000hz. Sounds great.

I barely got enough volume to be happy out of the 9.0 to be honest.

* The problem I have with the Shuttles is the same as with the VT Deluxe/VT bass/RBI -- the gain adds too much dirt. By the time you get loud enough your signal is not clean anymore. The Shuttle 6/9 will get plenty loud but by the time it's hitting the point I am happy with there's often enough breakup from the tube section that it doesn't get the clean tone I want. YMMV on that, but that's how it was for me -- even with the 9.0

Spent the night doing assembly and wire-up on the first of my two 15/6/1s.

And then I hooked it up to my power amp for the first time...and I'm going to have a hard time getting rid of the big, stupid grin on my face! I can't even imagine how monumental this will sound with both cabinets running.

First of all, the Fearful sounds SO much better than traditional bass speakers. Notes simply come alive! All kinds of subtle nuances in each instrument I plugged in became immediately evident. And real, honest to goodness, clean, chest-thumping BASS!

Then I had loads of fun running an Ipod through my rack...a little twiddling with my parametric EQ really opened my eyes to what these things are capable of in terms of true "full range" and the fact that these is for all intents and purposes a studio-grade PA rig.

I was able to easily dial in and out kick drums, horn parts, vocals, bass, and on and on and on. From just an hour or so of listening, I'm sold. I can't wait to get the other box finished up and then hear the pair in action!!!

Here's a shot of the stack showing the two cabinets. I used Duratex on the outside and used my luthierie finishing technique to do a nice black cherry ceruse-style finish on the baffle (it's hard to make out the grain in the light).

Good spotting on the waveguide! Already fixed :)

I'll put up some better pictures once I get the other box wired up and can show the whole finished rig in its glory.

I think you'll probably LOVE it. And no it won't be too much.

Although I haven't gigged with this yet, it is amazing...

My sound is bigger and cleaner than it ever was before this amp/ cab combination.

I guess I'm not making any sense out of what you did last night having anything to do with either the Crown or the Shuttle, or fEARfuls. But I will say that a lot of micros come up short compared to most pro power amps when it comes to actual voltage delivery to loudspeakers.

As long as it has EQ knobs the scooped nature thing is only a default state anyway - that can easily be changed. There's a thread floating around here on TB that shows various SL EQ moves in graph form.

Much easier to do, no hole to make, just some bolts w/ nylock nuts.I did use somewhat lighter weight grills. Finish is a catalyzed poly. It's made out of Eurolite ply ( Italian poplar) and it weighs just under 36 lbs.

That's impressive. I am wondering about the circular grills- what size did you use? The 6 inch and 15 inch grills (which are actually a little bigger than their nominal size), or did you have to "up-size" the 18sound mid drive with an 8 inch grill? Thanks.

Basically with the shuttle I could easily push the amp to clipping and the cab could easily handle much more. I gave the example in another thread that it was like having a 4 cylinder engine in a muscle car. It will still get you where you need to go, but it's not nearly as much fun. I loved my shuttle but it was just not a fit for this cab and I absolutely LOVE this cab. I got the Crown amp for $220 on the bay and the Presonus for $205 so I basically traded the shuttle for this rig and got a lot more power to boot. The rack rig is surprisingly light weight as well. It's in the 20lb range. It weighs less than my old SWR SM-500 head all by itself. I really like having the headroom.

Another approach that can be similar to your and JGR's is to buy some fancy veneer on eBAy or whatever and surface the baffle with that. Passinwind used it to trim up the look elsewhere, but it's a shoe-in on baffles as well.

Yeah, cruisin' is mainly going slow enough not to get busted most of the time. But show me a guy who doesn't occasionally enjoy smokin' the meats and clockin' the hell out of the citizens nearby who think their ride is so effin' great, and I'll show you someone who doesn't enjoy electric music enough ; }
