fEARful part nine (9)

Starting a fledgling bass player, especially a very young one, with a "Revealer of Truth, Slayer of Inferior Beings" cab like a fEARful would be tantamount to giving her The Mothman Bass as a first bass.

No...let her have some random cab with a random driver that may or may not be ported...with fire...and holes...with bare wire hookup. Like we had. She must LEARN the ways of the force. Not everyone should be allowed to levitate the X-Wing out of the swamp right off the bat, you know. Even our own offspring. ;)

Wrestling with 12/6/1 versus 15/6/1. Maybe I build one each and provide the smaller to my daughter who has started playing bass. Mini rig of doom starting out might ruin her.

I have been a LONG-time, loyal 15 guy & even have a fE15sub roughed out but am now considering jumping ship, going to only 12's.

I have finally played out a few times with my fE12 cube & the amount of bass it puts out is pretty incredible. I'm convinced that a second one would be all I'll ever need. I like the fact it's smaller, way lighter & easier to pack than my old 15's.

The prospect of her being possessed by the Mothman is frightening. Steps up to the microphone and young girl comes up with a voice like Lemmy! Would sell though..... Her ESP LTD bass though is decent, had a fanatic setup, and is something that I would not be humiliated to play in public.

I guess a ratty old Peavy combo would suffice. Crappiest amp I've got at the moment is a SWR Redhead which would not be proper suffering. I can get her a GK 210 combo cheap. Problem is she's grown up hearing Mesa, SWR, and various component rigs of doom. She knows what a decent rig sounds like. She would want a 12/6/1 rig in custom red duratex with some micro head to drive it.

Building a joined 12/6 fearful, to replace a stolen (kinda my own fault) SWR triad. Looks pretty good so far.

With any luck I should have the speakers installed this weekend. Anyway; I'm pleased with it. I'll put up some more pictures when It's done

I put some linseed oil on it (no pictures yet, took on a nice red though), and last night put a coat of marine polyurethane on it. I'll re-coat tonight and Friday, it should be usable Saturday.

Old school cabinet making. I love it. It takes a real love of woodworking to salvage old materials and make it work. Especially using mostly hand tools. Hand cut dovetails. Mad Props.

+1

Sound like a job for a 1980's Peavey TKO. When she can lift it she can have the fEarful..........

Isn't it a bad idea to 'break in' the speakers outside of the completed box?

Nope. Just pay attention to how much power you put to them. I routinely break in drivers all the time mounted to a baffle board I made to hold 6 at a time. I use an antique heathkit and a laptop generator program to run them. With 301x drivers, I set it for just under max excursion, run it for 8-10 hrs. If doing more than one wire them out of phase. All you'll hear is a light chuffing.
