fEARful part nine (9)

For complete cabs sure. I have a 15/6/1 and a 12/6/1 cube finished that were prototypes to work from. They're already sold. For flatpacks I'm still in process. No prices on them until I have it dialed.

Nice. Thanks again for getting on board with the fEarful project. I hope it works as well for you as for the rest of the players who, up to this point could only DIY their own woodwork and builds or get stuck with a 'nEarful'.

I have long been eyeing one of the 12/6 or 1212/6 cabs to do a compact Brown Note Generator (BNG), meaning something that goes smoothly down to a low B and does not act like something unusual is happening. BNG is based of the erroneous idea low frequency stuff makes you poo. Mind you, hallucinate, vomit, or be disoriented is documented.

The fearfuls will make a B note like you've never heard before. At home at least.

Testing out the HPF and the HF driver.

I've been around roots reggae, dub, as well as revivals in ska and the like. I've done stages with some fairly major performers, and I've seen some of those same acts in small clubs with no PA support for anything but vocals.

I've tried the woofer unfiltered, and with various active lowpass filter configs. You can do whatever you want when there is no midrange driver because you don't have to worry about decent off-axis response and blending the drivers. Some of the sounds are very nice indeed.

But the fact remains I think, that on a live stage it really helps to have at least a little content in the range above the 3015LF's. Even a little makes a big difference, and doesn't limit one to purist roots style stuff. The moment you get beyond clean skanking riddim guitars and keyboards, then having some non-tweeter content between 1K and 3K Hz really pays off.

It also makes the cabs capable of addressing practically anything that comes your way regardless of how the stage is situated, how small or large, etc... At one point I had a quote on Alex's (barefaced bass) website that a 3015LF (or two) only would be slick for dub... but I'd never actually limit myself that way even if a roots/dub band was my only present outlet. I think BurningSkies has an ultimate setup that will hang in any hybrid band, and be louder in an all-dub band even on a cramped odd stage where it's hard to hear what's going on, all without messing up the deep roots foundation.

At one point I considered doing a 15/6 crossover for the Alpha6A (and now Alphalite which is nearly identical in needs) for those who thought they needed only reduced upper content. But so many other things always come up. And there is always effective use of EQ and hand technique anyway.

Well if you wait a little bit longer, you'll be able to order pre-cut wood for the cabinet from speakerhardware.com Otherwise you will want at the bare minimum a circular saw, though a radial arm saw or table saw would be far better. Also a jig saw, scroll saw, or router for cutting the holes.

Apart from the cutting, all you really need is glue, some clamps, and patience.

For raw ingredients, you're looking at about $450 and up.

Also, the 12/6 fEarful will walk all over your average 210; so you could think of this more as building a replacement to your current cab.

Thanks for the input. As I don't really have the space for anymore tools than the ones I mentioned right now I'll definitely keep an eye on speakerhardware.

I planned on wiring it for 8 ohms so I could use both the 210 and 12/6 together at 4 ohms if needed.

Here's my CBG 15/6 crossover (with L-pad for 18sound mid). And it actually works! I pretty much tried to copy some of the other ones that I've seen. I already have the 1/2" Arauco Ply cut and ready to go! I'm just waiting for a couple of nice days here in NYC to start putting it all together. Hopefully, I'll remember to take some pics of the build in progress.

Thank you GB!

Gonna build a 12/6/1. Bought my Arauco. Probably will start cutting this weekend. Waiting on Leland to get more Duratex in before I order the drivers.

Question: If one wanted to have the possibility of using a pair 12/6/1 's as PA tops, is there a way to put a mount on the bottom for a speaker stand since the port divider goes right down the middle?

If one uses a guide like for instance a piece of smaller angle iron and a couple of cheap C-clamps one can very easily cut all panels with a handheld saw. I've done a lot of bvuilding that way.

And by using some screws temporary or otherwise, or a brad nailer or deep stapler, and some other tricks (including the use of weights and temporary "homemade to a certain size" wooden "clamps"), one can do without much at all in the way of clamps. The major tool that comes in handy to make a more sophisticated cab is a router to do Round-overs on the edges and corners which when finished makes it pretty damned pro.

Thank you GB!

Good layout here for an all-on-one-board job, Jc575. Compact, and provides good air passange around resistors. Nice to see the photo section on crossover builds slowly informing upcoming builders, always good to see group progress. But some dimensions or other data in text descriptions would always be nice additions, folks : }

I see a couple areas there that could have cutouts in addition to that under the resistors, for some weight shaving.

Way great to see people going forward, and nice paint stuff there, Wade. Good work, all!

EDIT: What would really be cool is a PCB or three that was set up to deal with all fEARfuls.
