I ask Customer Service to put on the second address of my info "Please knock loudly".
Also ask them to require a signature upon delivery.
You can also hang a sign on your front door: "Don't leave. I'm home. Knock loudly 3 times" or something like that.

That's why anything that won't fit in my mailbox gets delivered to my office.
Smashed upon arrival is curiously less frustrating to me than the dreaded “sorry we missed you!” note...
I had a sign on the door, saying to attempt delivery once and then hold for customer pickup - them misinterpreting that was when this whole business of leaving the door tag without even knocking or ringing started.
If this one ends up smashed, someone's getting hurt. (Edit: likely me.)
That sucks.
Be interesting to know if he brought the bass up to the door with the note or just had the note ready before he got out of the truck. Is he lazy or stupid?
If you gave customer service enough of an earful they should have sent a message to the courier telling them you were home and to reattempt delivery!
My bet's on limp wrists, baby skin, and rushing to appear efficient to their boss. I worked for DHL once and several of the trainers had hilariously soft "knocks". They'd tap the damn door -to give them credit, they did use at least one knuckle- wait all of 0.700 seconds, scribble out a yellow slip and dash back to the truck. If they're paid hourly rate, they get to bargain for better raises by getting back to the garage quicker than everyone else.
They've done that to me before too. It sucks. Customer service could care less.
i was able to redirect as 'hold for delivery' a couple of times before with much success. set it up online before home delivery was ever attempted.
Talked with one of the guys on the truck - he claims they banged on the storm door window - of course, that makes no sound inside the house - why they couldn't have rung the doorbell or at least knocked on the actual door, I cannot understand. Must have been behind schedule is all I can think of.
I don't get that extra fee here, probably not FedEx's fault, but I do worry that if I complain, the next box to arrive through FedEx might have a big boot hole through it...
Fed Ex leaves a lot to be desired. I need to rebuild my PC and they just left my CPU and motherboard at my front door without ringing the doorbell. Anyone in my cul-de-sac could've driven up and taken it.

Always set your packages to will call & pick them up on your own time. I've been doing it for years & it's saved me lots of problems.
Unfortunately MF & GC now do something to their shipments so you can't put them on will call on your own.
