'feedback-resistant' microphone for upright bass

Add a preamp to your signal chain to put your signal 180 degrees out of phase with the FOH.
An “invert” button does just that.

LR bags is one brand that can do it.
The likelihood is a different lot of frequencies in the PA will do the feeding back instead. It's not his bass, it's his mic and the PA, like when a singer gets in front of the mains.

I am speaking from experience: 1941 Kay mic’d With an AKG 112.

I agree, but when you use a contact pickup, a string bass will function as a microphone. You can solo the instrument in your headphones at FOH and hear muffled conversations on stage.

A contact pickup will give more isolation and gain before feedback than a mic, but if you need excessive volume, you have to ring the instrument out using the same process you would use to ring out a room. Flipping the polarity might help or make matters worse. Results vary from gig to gig.
 
Only a microphone on stage is indeed almost impossible to use, because the volume has to stay low (like Pat Harris said). But together with a piezo, it can sound so much more natural.

I'm a bit tired of the condensor, with those extra cables, phantom power n adapter, expensive, to sensitive, always bleed, … I'll try some cheap lightweight dynamic mic's in a shop and share my findings, probably next week. At low volume with a notch filter and eq, it should be easy and better sounding than only piezo's.

At the other hand, not a lot of bassplayers do this, and I understand why. Lots of time, the FOH has no experience with uprights, and are so proud of them wrongly placed subwoofers, they decide to lower the bass and let the kick do the work instead. Or similar results for other reasons.

WaterW said 'there may not be a choice' using a real mic. That's true, especially when the bassbody picks up vibrations (like John and Wasnex also experienced). Mostly it's only the mic and the PA causing problems, but an extra pickup would be the most safest and easiest solution. When I tried to handle feedback-problems, I also switched the fases. That did'nt help a lot, but it is indeed something that can help, when fighting feedback.
