Fender 70s P-Bass MIJ

is the P neck much thicker than the Geddy Jass?

The neck is (IMO) sort of between a Geddy and a standard "Modern C" neck. But don't be fooled, it is a P neck through and through.

The bass on the left is a Geddy Lee with a black PG. the bass on the right is my Highway 1 P with the new '70s p neck on it.

The Geddy is 1.50" at the nut, this 70's PBass is 1.62" at the nut.

Ity's been almost a year since I last auditioned/tried out the Geddy, but if I remember correctly the difference in thickness is really in the width of the fretboard. Not in the depth (fingerboard to back of neck) thickness.

The depth thickness on this P-bass is not really that thick.

Relatively close to the Jass depth thickness.

But my memory may be inaccurate on that aspect of the depth thickness. maybe someone who currebtly plays a Geddy could help out.

I was asking someone who has both. The Geddy is special for its fron-to-back thickness (or lack there of); it has the same 1.5" width as any other Jazz neck

+1 I also own both. I'm away and can't take measurements right now, but I can safely agree that the 70s neck employs the the traditional P width, but is noticeably thinner than both the American Standard and American Special Ps I played before buying this amazing bass. Geddy thin? No. However, it is by far the most comfortable P neck I personally have gotten my hands on. After playing J basses for 14 years, and having a Geddy for 6 of those, I can say that the 70s neck playability certainly eased the transition. I love this bass!

Well I have both (see pic above). I'm not near my calipers, but I will measure them (and my H1 p) and post the results. As far as feel goes:

My geddly lee is from 08. It has a thinner and flatter feeling neck than the newer GLs. It is also a bit finicky when it comes to neck adjustments due so much tension on such a skinny neck.

This 70s P neck feels almost as flat as the GL, but it's hard to compare directly because the GL is so thin in all dimensions that I can just wrap my hand around it like it's barely there. Infact, my strat's neck feels bigger at the nut than my GL.

The 70s p neck definitely feels flatter than my H1 (which is a very comfortable neck in its own right IMO). The gloss finish is very glassy and I think it is the fastest non-custom p neck i have ever played. there is a bass emporium vid where the guy reviewing it makes mention to the fast neck feel. I agree with him.

Again, I will post caliper measurements (tolerance of .001) later today.

I saw, thank you. The "modern C" shape isn't too bad for me, but I think the Geddy has spoiled me. I'm waiting to try one myself, but my store is slow to get new releases

Both necks - the Geddy and the 70's p -- measure just over an inch in thickness at the nut. I couldn't get as accurate as I wanted to with the strings on, but I would say they are pretty much the same. at least mine are. ymmv

+1 on stock pickup. Excellent tone.

In the time between the start of this thread and its zombie revival, production was moved to Mexico. If there are any MIJ units still out there, their stock number starts with 026-. Very occasionally these show up in the Classifieds. Incredible bargain when purchased used.

I got a super-steal on one of these after watching it sit in the store for over a year. NOS MIJ. It's light, resonant, and the neck is beautiful and flamed (just luck, I guess). Stock pickup is awesome.

Here’s where my 70s MIJ P neck ended up… a Timmy C tribute J bass. The white body ended up getting a Dimarzio pickup (the one that has black adjustable poles), black Hipshot bridge, black aluminum Sadowsky style knobs, solid rosewood Warmoth neck with rosewood dotted board and black Hipshot tuners.

So The neck should be the same as the replacement neck
