Fender 70s P-Bass MIJ

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
Fender '70s Precision Bass - Dave's Guitar Shop

I came across this listing today, I never heard of this model before, I don't know if its new, for the Japanese market only, or if I've been under a rock. Does anyone have any experience with this model? how does it feel/play/sound? I think it looks fantastic, just like my sunburst Geddy Lee Jazz, they would look great together side by side in my apartment :p

Black body with a black or gold PG would be a good look.
I built one from eBay parts '01 Precision Butterscotch body, black aluminum guard, '72 Jazz neck. I like this color combo.

It's also available in white... what does it sound like? Anyone know? I really like the look of this... I saw Suzi Quatro playing a Jazz version of this in March and it sounds amazing... would love some reviews of this P bass.

Anyone know what pickups are on it?

I fell in love with this bass at a shop in San Francisco last weekend. Planning on putting it on layaway next week. I've been looking around for p basses for a year, with plans on happily dropping $2k on the right one if I had to, but this thing showed up for $850, with perfect neck and action. I actually thought it played better than all the Americans I had played, although the shop I was checking out Americans at had Custom Shop Relic basses too, and I honestly think they mess up the action on the MIMs and MIJs and even MIAs to make the Relics play better. Dicks.

Any pickup replacement recommendations for this model?

I ordered one in Olympic White, should be here by Thursday. And I ordered from Chuck at Bass Emporium (Chuck is the guy in the video with this bass). A very positive experience. Chuck is a really nice guy and was extremely patient and helpful in answering my questions and processing and completing this order. it's so good to see good guys are still out there, in the business!!!

Bought a new 70s Fender Precision from GC and have been playing it for several days now. Am used to an old Fender Jazz so the neck is taking a little time for my fingers to get used to. The fingering is actually freer and easier(though not faster):) than the Jazz but my pick hand keeps looking for the strings in a slightly different place. Nut width is 1.625 inches versus 1.5 for the Jazz and 1.75 for some older Precisions. Good workmanship on instrument. Sunburst and wood is beautiful and black pickguard looks better than on Precisions with white or red pickguard. Need to put on a good pair of flat wounds. Got a real good deal from GC and this bass may be my main instrument for a while. The sound is slightly fuller, more soulful and less driving than the Jazz .Seems that the painted neck gives a brighter sound than the rosewood. Since it is MIJ it should stand up over time. Good choice if somebody can not afford a MIA.

You think that it is not as good, as an American ? Is not equivalent to an American standard ? Also, there is a problem in the electronics or the pickup ? I would like to see your opinions. I want to buy a American standard or the new 70s Precision. What do you suggest ?

^^^

I won't venture into which one is better made but I would say they both provide great value for money. I would suggest trying them both if possible because the neck profile is going to be slightly different. I am trying to get my hands on the 70s p to see how the neck feels. I have a japan 70s reissue (pb 70) and the neck is slightly thinner than the US standard. For me that's a good thing....

It is not easy for me to try these 2 Basses and that is why I'm asking you. In the small town where I live there not is a shop that has Fender basses. I think after 6 years of i play, I want to buy my first good bass (which we will order it from another country) and I am between the American standard and the 70s classic precision (No big difference in price). I have read here and other threads and I know that the 70s is very good quality construction and very good neck, but I'm not sure to the pickup and the bridge. For each opinion, I will be grateful ...

I do not have an American STD P to compare to the 70s P but others have said that the sound is fuller in the MIA and I like the newer neck adjustment rod set up on the MIA. I also think the bridge on the 70s P is a little cheap compared to the higher mass bridge on the MIA. However I can not afford the MIA so happily settled for the 70s MIJ P. I hear the neck size at the nut is similar between the two basses and feels similar and neck plays similarly.

Any idea on what stock p'ups they threw in this baby?

The ambiguous description on Fender's website just says: Split Single-Coil Precision Bass pickup (Middle)

I currently own two other CIJ basses and was never satisfied with the stock pickups. Has anyone changed/considered changing out the stock p'ups in theirs? And for what?
