FENDER 9050CL FLATS NOW AVAILABLE AT JUST STRINGS!

New ones. Black with green pack, had the F on it. Green silks.

What gauge? When I first tried them last fall, the CL set wasn't on the shelves yet, and I tried an L set with a 100 E string. That string was too soft in feel and tone for me also. It was after that I was able to get a 105 E string separately and bring the set up with more bite on the E string.

BTW -- green silks have been a standard for Fender flats for decades, so you can't tell the age of your string by the silk. I actually have a NOS CBS-era 95 E string in its original envelope, and its silk is exactly the same color as the new ones.

This is interesting. I've been in need of a new set of flats for a while now, but I'd like to bump up the tension (I am a recent double bass convert). So my question is: What's the difference (sonically) between the 9050M set and 9050CL set? I also see the M set is cheaper, which is definitely appealing.

After trying the "new" Fender flats and was horribly disappointed, I don't see a reason to try this set.

The old Fender flats are divine. I found some left over at a store and got them to keep me going for a while.

I'm worried about what to do after I use them :(

Flats last forever Sleeq. You should be set. Plus, there'll be NOS on eBay for years.

If you are like Sleeq and downright hated the new Fender flats just intrinsically (after actually trying them), I wouldn't waste your time with these--let's be honest about it. But if you're like me and like them (a lot!), this balanced set is the best of the best.

Any ideas for my AB(C) test?

Just like everything else, if you actually tried them and didn't like them, I respect that. That's why there are literally hundreds of bass string sets from all the different manufacturers, in all the different styles (round, flat, ground, etc.), in all different wraps (stainless, pure nickel, nickel plate, etc.) and in all different gauges.

Because of where I live and at any given day will be playing almost every genre imaginable from Friday evening to Sunday morning, for me these are the most consistent, most versatile, most economic, best strings I have ever played.

I think it's the other way around. On some really long scale basses that are body through, they won't fit. They fit conventional string-through and top-load bridges just fine.

So has anyone else played these? I'm thinking this Summer I might have a Jazz PU installed in the bridge location on my Squier Affinity P, and the ratty old Chromes on there will be replaced.

I'm considering the 9050CL. Either that, or my trusty 50-105 Chromes again. This set sounds great, but they won't withstand any more abuse (on the silks and such)
