I have the Candy Apple Red version and it's great! Interestingly though, mine is about a pound heavier than my export edition…probably because of the extra hardware (control plate, pickguard) and the fact that less wood is routed out (front-routed vs. rear-routed).
Sweet looking Aerodyne. Honestly the colors other than the basic black dont usually get it for me, but the white is nice. personally I would probably become obsessed with replacing the cover plate with someting other than chrome, but its a sharp looking bass in either case, let us know if you get it.
I have an "anti-chrome" gene or something, just dont like the looks of it on much anything, including my motorcycles, where I try to minimize it to the greatest degree possible.

Does anyone know if these can go pickguardless, or is there routing under there?
Or does anyone know which, if any, pick guards will fit? I despise pearloid.

Hey guys I hate to derail the thread but I might be buying a 90s CIJ aerodyne jazz tomorrow, I made a post earlier today about my concerns for it but I wanted to get some more opinions from people who have them. The bass has a loose nut that needs to be glued back on, a good amount of dings and dents mostly on the back, and a neck that I'm not sure is still good. I plan on going back to the pawn shop tomorrow and asking the guy if I can make a truss rod adjustment to see if the truss rod is maxed out or seized. It has a large amount of relief in it.
I was able to talk him down from $525 to $400, do you guys think $400 would be a fair price if the neck turns out to be fine?

That's a sweet bass. I love medium scale, and have gas-ed for a non-export Aerodyne for a long time.
How does it sound?
If no one here can help with the pickguard, There are some folks in the Medium Scale Club that have these, someone there might be able to help you out as well...
I just ordered it online from a GC in California. I didn't even speak to anyone in the story about it. Just took the plunge. Ground shipping to NY was $17 and overnight was $30 so I got that. Should be here on Tuesday. Based on everything I'm seeing online about these, the tug bar, pickguard, and knobs don't look original. We'll see.
Anyone know how good or bad the jazz pickups and wiring are in the aerodyne I ordered. In my experience with PJ aerodynes, the pickups are good, but great.
I'm pretty sure the routing under the PG means you're not going to be going without, but it's possible the medium scale JJ model is different than then usual PJ. Also, I think the pearl PG was factory stock on those models, rather than the WBW that comes on the full scale models. I would imagine that the only way to get a different guard would be to have it custom made, as the body is downsized and not interchangeable with anything else that's out there.

It's not a big deal, as you would ship to my NY address, but let's cross that bridge later if need be. Get that beauty in your hands first and see what you think - hopefully it's a keeper for you.
Just my humble opinion here but I think 4 bills is a bit steep even if the rod is good, considering the dings and dents you describe. I paid 425 for my Aerodyne PJ, of evilbay and it was practically brand new condition with nary a mark or blemish anywhere on it when I bought it. Granted this was circa 2005 / 2006 timeframe. I ended up swapping out my pups for DiMarzio's, and shielding the cavity; haven't looked back. They are great basses if you can find a good one. If its banged up and has a loose nut, I'd be looking to see some serious discount on the price even with a good neck. Realistically a pawn shop probably only paid out $75 for it.

I had a custom PG made by an outfit in West Virginia for my Stingray 5. They were not fast but they did great work, and they made exactly what I was looking for.
If I ever want another custom PG they will be my first call. Here's their website:

Thank you for the response, this was exactly what I was looking for. It had a large amount of dings dents and a chip on the side of the control cavity, all the hardware was corroded and the nut was sliding back and forth. It seemed like it was abused and neglected by the previous owner and the guy was really firm on $400, I love aerodynes and have always wanted one but I'm definitely going to pass on this one. thanks again
