How do you like the LaBella flatwounds on your aerodyne?
Cool. I have a set of Fender nylon tapewound strings on a Samick P bass. I like them, but I'm pretty new to bass, so what do I know lol. It looks like I'm gonna be buying a Aerodyne Jazz bass this weekend. $350 Canadian off a local guy. It'll be my first real Fender. I have 3 Squier's. I'll decide for sure when I see it. Hope it's not in too bad a shape, it's missing a knob.I like them just fine at home and amplified, and enjoy the tapewound feel pretty. But I've had both the LaBella's and Fender flats on this bass, and to my ears the Fender flats win for the most traditional "P with flats" tone, of course. I have not had a chance to play the bass out (or significantly cranked) with the LaBellas, so my review is only half as good as it could be! (One reason I'm selling--lack of current gigs)

Thanks. I see your short scale Ibanez for sale. I wonder how crazy shipping charges would be to ship it to Alberta if I bought it?That's cool! I've got roundwounds on my Aerodyne jazz, and I love the sounds I can get with it. Good luck! I hope it's a keeper.

All I know really is that the cheapest price in Canada for a new Aerodyne jazz is $999. $1079 at Long and McQuades, Canada's Walmart for instruments. What's a good price for one of the models with the strat-style jack? I saw one on CL and I think it's an 02-04 (says crafted and is a Q+6 serial). Is there any difference over the years? I didn't know if newer or older was better or if it matters at all.

Hey dudes! I'm thinking about grabbing an Aerodyne. I really want a bass that can get some Duff McKagan or Mike Dirnt tones, is this a good option. I know they both have signatures, but I think I'd rather carve out my own path in the bass world the way they did.
@_HunterB_ I have no experience chasing those tones, so no help there, but I wanted to say Welcome to Talkbass!
Sure thing! At the end of the day, it'll sound just like a P or a PJ bass. You could then sculpt your tone with technique, strings, pickups and preamps. I'm sure you'll appreciate the Aerodyne's lightweight and slim body, not to mention the kickass binding![]()
How do you like your Aerodyne for what you play?
I play a lot of Theater gigs these days—and the genres vary wildly, so the instrument(s) I use depend on the show vibe and charts; I have a 5-string with fairly bright rounds on it, a fretless with LaBella copper whites, and other tools in the bag.
I picked up the Aerodyne jazz because shows can run four hours, and I needed something comfortable that also played and sounded great. The last show I used some effects, so also wanted a clean, clear tone that I could muck with. It totally fit the bill, but I also found that I had to be conscious of my playing, as I could pull All Kinds of different sounds out of it by just changing my hand position.
This sounds like a beginner observation, but I’ve been playing for 35 years; I just never had as responsive a bass before. Kind of blew my mind.![]()
Do all Aerodyne's have a black fretboard? I'm probably buying one today and in the pic of the bass it looks to me like it has a maple fretboard. I'm starting to wonder if it had the neck swapped. I really like the everything black look of all the ones I see online and a maple would disappoint me. Please inform me Aerodyne experts![]()
