Fender American Design Experience

. If you sold the neck you could probably recoup $400 or $500, as Fender necks go for a lot of money on eBay.

Heck, right now, you can buy jazz and precision necks directly from fender a la cart for $399 for the American line or $199 for the Mexican lines. They even have the '70's Style B&B jazz necks' for $399 at Invalid Link Removed. Yes, you do need to drill for the tuning machine screws, but that's it as far as I can see... *Edit* Actually, the back picture shows holes for the standard style open-back tuners, so you may not even have to drill for that. Screw em in, slap it on and go. But they do say you need to file the nut.

I was basing that price on what I've seen consistently on eBay. Looks like MIA Jazz necks go for $300 - $500 depending on the condition, seller, etc.

Not surprised Fender sells them, looks like the ones on eBay are "complete" with nut, etc, so I guess that explains the up-charge.

Weird; I'd wonder why they're going for more on eBay, but it's eBay and that's normal.
The Fender neck and body 'a la cart option' through the Fender store is relatively recent (within the last year or so IIRC). I noticed that the prices for stripped necks and bodies from sellers like the Stratosphere dropped a little when Fender started offering them, but they've come back up. It may be just that people don't realize they can go 'direct to the source'. Also, the offerings in the Fender store tend to vary from time to time, depending on what they do have around. There was a while there where they apparently had a bunch of extra Mystic Red and Mystic Blue left handed bodies that they were trying to get rid of, but only one or two colors for the right hand bodies.

The only thing you need to drill is the string tree hole.

It says 1.625 nut and 9.5 radius. Doesn't sound like a vintage jazz bass

It says jazz and looks like a jazz but it's p bass width. Weird
Whoops, didn't pay attention to the nut width.. That is likely a misprint.. The radius on the other hand, they're making everything 9.5 radius these days.

The funny thing is that they do have the maple with black blocks for the p-basses (Like they've been putting on their classic 70's P's). If it's not a misprint, I'm all over this neck... My hands don't care for the 1.5" nut width, but I like the 1.625... Actually been looking at going through Warmoth to get a Precision-width neck with a bound rosewood fb and pearloid blocks. It would save me a chunk of cash... But the nut width is likely a misprint.

Since the neck is MIM and poly-covered, it's probably the same neck they use for the Classic 70's jazz bass.

Not to beat a dead horse but regarding the "Frankenfender" debate I must point out that for many years Fender would swap necks from one bass to another to accomodate the maple/rosewood orders from customers. I guess all those were "Frankenfenders" too...It seems that some peeps have no understanding of instrument production here. Those ADE are pretty much the equivalent of ordering a Carvin bass. The term "Frankenfender" only applies to a bass made from parts coming from different existing instruments and that someone had put together . It is that simple.
Anyhow, I think that Fender will make sure those ADE basses are top notch and the difference in price will be justified.
