Fender American Precision Deluxe

Do the Deluxes have an option for a Passive mode?

I think what I would really like to find is a P/J 5-string that is either all passive or at least has a passive mode.

IIRC no they don't.

But the new Deluxe Fenders do not have an option for a Precision 5-string, right? I don't see one on Fender's site.

Correct, the deluxe model doesn't offer a 5 string model anymore. If you want a new 5 string P, you have to get the American Standard.

FrankJohnson..quite simply, that is the most beautiful bass I have ever seen!! Did it come that way, or did someone do it over to you specs??

Thank you Hammertime3

it was actually a gift from a good friend and I added the tort pickguard. It sat in a local shop new and unsold for about 4 years. It is ash and has the antique cherry finish that was discontinued. I love it too - and couldn't believe that it sat unloved all that time.

You have to admit though....the natural finish on the one at the head of this string is so nice. I think that a tort pg would really change its character just a little. Its a beaut canadian_man_44 !

That's not the same bass. The one in the link has a single J pickup in the bridge position instead of the dual J. The dual J's at the bridge position have been discontinued. Which IMO is a shame.

+1 the pre 2010 models with the fat humbucker in the bridge position are destined to be classics- imo, the best bass fender has ever made, CS excluded. Also, +1 to the vol/pan/stacked bass&treb/mid knob layout. With the pan knob at the center detent, it's a 50/50 mix of both pups, turn slightly either way to favor one or the other, all the way to solo. Great bass, congrats. (the only non-Ric bass I own)

Thank you. I've got to get some better pictures of it though. These were taken with my Blackberry(no flash) in not to great lighting so the finish doesn't pop like it does in person. The finish is butterscotch blonde....which would look more like this if my BB camera didn't suck.

If its more butterscotch - I may resind my tort suggestion.

Black is classic on it!

Its a remarkable bass !

Does fender still make this bass with the double J Pickups ?

No - the 5-string model was discontinued IIRC in the Fall of '09, the 4-string about a year later to make way for the "new" American Deluxe Jazz and Precision Basses, the latter of which is electronically a "standard" P/J Precision albeit with Active/Passive electronics. :scowl:

A shame as well - as very much not a P-Bass player I found this to be the one Precision that I liked the tone of, and regret not picking one up when I had the chance. As I do realize the usefulness of having the tone of a P-Bass available my future plans are to see if a custom builder would insert this pickup combination (specifically a Nordstrand NP5 and DC5) in a Jazz Bass body, as I'm far more comfortable with the ergonomics of a Jazz body & neck compared to a Precision.

Hey cassanova. I walked into the local Long and McQuade yesterday to get some new strings before getting this bass set up. Of course, I had to take a quick look at their basses while I was there. The last Fender bass on their wall was a USA Precision Deluxe with the double jazz pickup like mine so there are definitely still some new ones hanging around if you hit the right store.

I'm absolutely loving this bass. It is without a doubt the best bass I have ever played. I'm playing around with different strings at the moment. I'm not sure of the brand on it when I got it. Anyway, other then those I've tried D'daddario and currently have Rotosounds on it, which are great strings IMO. Anyway, I'm looking to try a set of flatwounds on it. I've read some threads on here about them and have seen a lot of differing opinions. Thinking of trying a set of Chromes. I believe that's what I had on a fretless I used to own and I loved the feel of them. I'll have to see how it effects the tone, but with the active pickups and 3 band EQ I'm sure they'll be just fine.

I've put Chromes on it since this thread was last updated....in fact, probably a within a couple days of the last post and I am extremely happy with them. They are bright enough that with a couple minor EQ adjustments I can get a sweet slap and pluck sound out of them, but I can also get a sweet mellow sound out of it. Best of both worlds for sure.

There's a 2009 model in inventory (I haven't called to make sure) ... similar to my 2007 model.

I concur with former comments in this thread. the bridge humbucker is great. I play mostly P-sounds which are phenomenal too, but with flats, I get a "Dire Straits wal sound" if required with the bridge pup.

The only complaint I might have is that the preamp hisses when the treble is boosted. But, I never boost the treble. I put a hipshot bridge on mine, and it is so easy to set up now.

OK WHAT IS THIS MODEL GONNA SET US BACK?
how much did you get yours for an what is the exact model that has the large bride p.u so I can start lookin around?

all the '09 and earlier P models have the bucker @ the bridge.

I traded a minty Marcus Miller even swap for my used '04 at a local store. I consider that the best trade ever, even though my deluxe has a good bit of wear.
