They created this for guitarists wanting to play bass. No need to get hyper critical - they are still making some excellent basses.

Like the idea, but definitely would prefer 20/21 frets.

I'd be more inclined to look seriously at the Rascal.

I plan on picking up one of these, or that new Ibanez 6er, in the near future & using standard guitar tuning. Always found regular guitar scales too small.

The excess weight in the Modern Player series is due to the use of alder for the bodies, as opposed to basswood and agathis in the Classic Vibes/Vintage Modified series (yes, I know that some of the VM's have soft maple bodies, too.)

One question for those in the know...

The Mustangs and the Rascal all have 30" scale necks with 20/21 frets (obviously tighter spacing compared to the larger 34" templates), but this new P&J Jazz only has 18 frets - Does this indicate similar fret spacing to the 34" transplanted onto a shorter scale neck, or just a shorter version of the 30" neck?!

No.Spacing remains 30" between nut and bridge. Theoretically you could extend frets
on a longer board clear up to the bridge or you could shorten the length of the neck with fewer frets like the old 60s bass V but you'd have a longer body,the fret spacing doesn't change

I would have to agree. Not many people ever play past the 18 fret or even make it past the 15th. Now, if you do for that one or possible two songs that you do play past the 18th I am sure you have a second or third bass that you can use. Most bass players I know always seem to have a backup bass. I may have to look into this one. It looks interesting.
