Fender Bass VI vs Fender Jaguar Baritone???

So I really want a Bass VI but it's hard to find them, and even the Japanese ones are going for upwards of $2k. I'd consider paying that but I'm wondering if anyone has played an E - E tuned Jag Baritone and could chime in on how they stack up against the Bass VI. I'm thinking that there's no substitute for an E - E Bass VI and that the Jags make great B baritones, and maybe even A baritones...but actually E tuned basses? I'm doubtful. And I'd rather not spend $1,000 finding out.

What's the word, peeps?

stay away from the Jaguar vi. The scale length is only 28.5 I believe, so its not really good for E-e tuning. I'd suggest building your own. Warmoth has an intersting bass vi style body and neck.

Can't say much about the Fenders as I don't own one (I've got one of those Schecters that you don't want to hear about... loving it by the way...) but you might want to pose your question in the short scale 6-string club thread. Numerous VI'er owners in there and I'm sure they could steer you in the right direction if you're really dead set on Fender or bust.

Look at the specs for the Rondo's..."Setup to intonate with 24 34 44 56 72 84 gauge strings"

Bass VI strings like those used for a Fender Bass VI or a Hellcat VI are thicker .095-.025. And it does make a substantial difference in sound. These Rondos are more like baritones in many ways than Bass VI's. If that's what you're looking for though this will work for you.

BTW jedgargroover, the custom shop or MIJ Bass VI's reproductions are nothing to write home about. VASTLY, VASTLY overpriced for what they are. Sound nothing like a "real" Bass VI. And a number of owners have spent a good sum of money moding them to sound decent and/or have buyer's regret. If your mantra is really "Fender or death" get ready to spend at least $4,000+ at a bare minimum to get a decent vintage one from the '60s or '70s. And I mean decent - don't expect good for that price.

Also, Schecter is introducing a new VI this spring called the Ultra VI. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
It will have enhanced and upgraded electronics vs. the Hellcat. All the specs are not posted yet on the site.Some of us over at TB short-scale 6-string and the FB Group Schecter Hellcat VI and Ultra VI Players (http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=153636914012) made some suggestions to Schecter which are going to be incorporated into the final production model. Should sound VERY nice.

As an owner of one of the Jaguar Baritone Customs I would say that this isn't quite right, the E-e tuning is fine, although you won't be playing many chords in lower positions you'll find plenty of decent tone and possibilities further up the neck.

is it worth getting over a Proper Bass VI? well that I can't answer having never played one.
