Fender basses with pup and bridge covers

As cool as they look, I find the pup covers to actually be really annoying, as that's exactly where my hand naturally rests when playing, so I rarely play with them on. The Bridge covers on the other hand are always on. I don't often palm mute, and I find them a very comfortable place to rest my hand when playing with a pick.

Here's what my '75 P looked like in April last year on the day I bought her:

Here's a more recent picture, now with replacement tort pickguard (the original was broken) and pickup cover removed. For me the pickup cover is useless, it gets in the way so I stuck it in the case.

I have to pull the pick up covers as they get in the way. The ashtrays have to stay on to keep from cutting my hands to shreds on those songs which require a pick.

P's & J's with the ash trays on remind me of mid-late 50's American cars with tail fins and massive chrome bumpers. They really dont do much but they look cool as hell. I used to have a 74 P and never had a problem playing in front or back of the pup cover.

Chrome. Would look fantastic on that bass. Black would look, well... terrible.

That's a cool pic, do you still have the 63? I think we need a current pic if ya do....

I still have the '63 Pbass. I wore-through the sunburst by the late '70s and stripped the body and refinished it with clear coat over some wood stain. Who knew "relics" would become popular! Now even the refinish is wearing through. How many solid, one-piece bodies do you see anymore?

The neck is still all original, well worn, frets almost worn smooth, and still has 40-year-old tobacco stain on the headstock where we used to stick our cigarettes to be cool. Oh yeah, and the plastic finger rest cracked, so I made one out of wood to replace it - original screws.

Somebody stole the original case with the chrome covers 20-years ago from backstage, but I still have (and play) the bass.

My first order of business was to remove the covers, but my wife loved the retro styling, so they stayed on (and I don't play it as much as my other Jazz's)...

My first P (a MIJ copy, in the mid 80's was fully covered) - long since lost the metal jacket...

What do you guys do when you take your pickup covers off. Do you put the screws back in or leave the holes open. I just put this parts bass together and I think I'm going to put a tug bar on but the holes by the pickups bother me. I don't think I would like a cover cause I play over the P pickup. Would screws look better than just the holes.
