Fender Blacktop Club

Here are my two. I thought I would try one of each.

Yet again, Guitar Center has a used Blacktop Jazz for sale, but knows nothing of it's provenance. I shouldn't be surprised, though. The Blacktop basses were only sold for about two years, and that was ten years ago, at that.

They have it listed as a "Player Jazz" with "upgraded pickups" and a price that I'd say is a bit high. I'm not in a buying vein, but I can't help but wonder if someone who is interested could talk them down. After all, the only thing "upgraded" is the pickguard. Plus, given their original sale price was the same as the MIM Standards, I see no reason it shouldn't be priced the same as the Standards they're currently listing.

I saw this too! I was curious if you talked to that store and if they give an indication on setup abs playability!

Looks like quarter pounder pickups upgraded, too?

Nah, no call. I already have a black BT Jazz. As for the pickups, I could barely tell anything from the picture. The pics on Guitar Center's used listings are dumbed down to some seriously low-rez. I want to say it's so you can't see much detail, but it's probably more like a way for them to save on bandwidth to pinch some pennies.

yeah you’re probably right!!!!

Somehow, I never got around to asking for a number here. Got anything ending in 59?
A long time ago, I asked if anyone wanted to take over numbers-duty from me, but no on stepped up. It's been so long, I can't even remember what the last number given was, let alone what the current highest would be.

If you do a search for the term "master list" among my postings on this thread, you should find the old list. If "59" isn't taken, it's yours.

The list seems to end in the 70s. I'd be quite happy with 959.

Time to blow the dust off the Blacktops!

As I am wont to do, I was "window shopping" Guitar Center's used database for good deals, as well as eyeballing anything that's straight-up interesting that washes up on their shores. Lo and behold, two different locations have Blacktop basses in stock…a Jazz and a Precision, both in White Chrome Pearl.

Personally, I think they're a bit overpriced, considering they went for $500 brand-new nine to eleven years ago, but I figured I'd post their links in case there was an interested party or someone aiming to have a matching set.

Side-question: If any of y'all could have a matching set, which would it be? A black and WCP Jazz or Precision? A color-matched J and P? All four, even? For me, it would have to be a set of Blacktop Jazzes.

For a Guitar Center photo, this one is pretty nice. It catches the shine and sparkle of that rare finish. :snaphappy:

I've been craving a double P for awhile now. Part numbers good! :D

Here's my Blacktop. Been a minute since I posted it and believe it had a blue pearl pickguard last time...

This is my first top to bottom modder and one of my very favorite basses. More recently, I upgraded the wiring a second time (I put in a blend and decided I no longer liked it) and it got a new pickguard and strap. The strap was by accident, but I think it works. Now, it has RotoSound 66s strings with red threading to match. I rolled with D'ad Chromes for the longest time on this bass. I strongly recommend the Rotos. Phenomenal attack if you're a picker. :)

What bridge did you use?
