Fender Blacktop Precision Bass switching idea

What is your suggested mode switching method?

single coil mode sounds much brighter and glassier from the low impedance coils (~7k per coil)

Using only one coil of the humbucker lowers your inductance, but increases your resonant frequency. Impedance actually evens out at the resonant frequency, but gets higher above and below the resonant frequency.

The impedance should be the lowest with the coils in series & highest with the coils in parallel. inductance would be the polar opposite, higher & lower, respectively

IOW, the circuit isn't seeing the DC Resistance of the coils, it's seeing the inductance of them.

inductance is calculated in the same way that resistance is, in series it simply adds
but in parallel it's more complicated
given two inductors of the same value, the parallel result is half of the value of a single coil

impedance is a moving target in a RLC circuit, but at the resonant frequency it's at it's lowest

I never was very good at math, haha

I don’t have the diagram you need but, because it’s a common mod, I’ll bet money it’s already in this or a related thread. I suggest doing some careful searching on this thread and/or ultimately this entire site. I’m sure it’s (already) here somewhere :thumbsup:

That's my problem. Is I have looked everywhere and cant find crap.
I just want to set it up normally but add that dpdt switch h in for a little ex tdd ra ooompf
 
Fender should have stopped screwing around long ago and produced an American version of this bass with the ability to select between any combination of the 4 coils. WHY FENDER???? WHY???? :bored:

They did. It was called a Roscoe Beck Signature. The only thing they didn't include was inner or outer coil selection. Single coil mode was the 60s Jazz positions.

Just to weigh in, I bought a Roscoe Beck just to try that out I didn’t like the sound at all, nothing like true single coil.
It was a gorgeous instrument, but I never got a sound out of it I liked.
Full disclosure, I never ended up liking the Blacktop P either.
