Fender Bridge Question

I have a MIM Fender Jazz Bass and i'm wanting to upgrade it a bit. Im gonna get the EMG J-Set, chrome Fender bridge and pickup covers and a Badass II bridge.

It seems to me that the Badass II Bridge is bigger than my current fender bridge so im wondering if ill still have enough room to fit the Fender Jazz Bass bridge cover over the Badass II Bridge?

Anyone have any experience of this or similar mods?

I don't know about the bridge cover, but I can tell you I made the same upgrade a while ago. I found a problem that you may want to anticipate. The BAII raises you strings higher off the deck. Lowering the saddle as low as it would go, I could not get the same low action I liked with the Fender bridge. I ended up shiming the neck and all worked out OK. I am not sure I noticed enough of a difference for all the work. Good luck.

No, the bridge cover will not fit over the Badass.

If you really want to use the covers, and want to change the bridge to something more substantial, try a Gotoh 201. You can get one from Warmoth for $30, and the covers will fit over it.

The Gotoh is nice but has wide saddles and prevents the lowest action. Better with a Hipshot Vintage; it keeps that special "ring" J-basses have but is very stable and will fit beneath a bridge cover.

A BAII won't fit under the Fender bridge cover. I learned this the hard way. It is longer than the stock bridge and if you use the stock mounting holes the BAII extends too far toward the bottom of the bass for the cover to fit correctly. I didn't even get into the height issue as mentioned earlier. The Gotoh bridge sounds like a better option.

I've always preferred a Fender "Vintage" bridge, the kind that has saddles that look like a threaded screw. Always plenty of sustain for me, and the saddle height screws are slotted head set screws. It's easier to keep track of a small screwdriver than yet another size allen wrench.
But, I'm an old skool kind of guy who prefers the simple design of older Fender basses. The bridge cover will definitely work with this bridge.
