Fender Classic 70s Jazz Question

I was wondering if anyone has taken the pickguard off of their classic 70s Jazz bass?

I own one but I was hoping someone would save me the effort of popping off the pickguard. Is there a big ugly CNC hole under there?

I'm thinking about popping out the frets, doing a sheilding job, and putting on a bridge cover to emulate Jerry Jemmott's old Jazz bass.

HI

I had a '72 that I had the guard off, like Jaco. No weird routes back then.

PLEASE do not rip the frets out. These old basses are worth hefty money now. If you need a fretless, get one. A reissue, whatever. You will regret it if you modify. KILLS the value. Good luck

Rob

Well tell that to this guy:
