Fender Decals On Non-Fender Basses

I wanted my car to appear like it was really fast, so I bought some really large numbers for the sides and top. In addition, I put a bunch of commercial stickers on the front quarter panels. I also painted some flames on the side. People think it goes really fast now. I also added a rear spoiler. Yeah, I know it adds downforce to the rear wheels & I have a front wheel drive car, but ya gotta look fast. Sure, it isn't a racing car, but everyone on the street thinks it can go really fast. But whatevs, even thought it has less than 150 hp, it gets me to work on time.

Speaking of time, I bought this really awesome watch on the street for like $20. Sure, it turns my wrist green, but it does have a five-pointed crown on the crown and the name in all capital letters. People congratulate me on my style all the time. They call me Bond. Not the newer Bond, who wears that Greek-letter watch, but the older one, who wears the Submareener just like this awesome one I scored.

Since Christmas is coming up, I decided to buy my wife a purse. I got this great deal from the local store. I got my wife one of those bags with all the C's on it. At 1/10th of what they cost at the mall. What a deal - I will totally score by giving her this present. All her friends will envy her at the local PTA meeting.

I got a fast car. I got a watch that looks like it cost me 2 months pay. My wife carries a fancy purse. My bass that I cobbled together out of parts? Why shouldn't that look authentic like the rest of my life?

i saw a minter in the local junk shop.... er i mean "antique" shop
its was a cheaply made sunburst imitation pbass i'll name the bits that really stood out to me as being "not fender"
headstock totally the wrong shape and badly finished (looked like jigsaw in a shed job almost)
pickups too close to the bridge
pickup poles waaaay to big to be fender
wrong bridge
wonky fender logo on the headstock
no serial anywhere

price tag read "fender bass £300"
i asked the bloke "hey mate is that price right?"
he says "yeah its a nice guitar that one"
me says "its not a real fender you know"
he says "of course it is i've been doing this job for 30 years i doubt you've even been alive that long dont tell me how to do my job if your not interested in it dont buy it!"
me says..... sod all sometimes it just isnt worth the hassle

i might try and get back down to get a picture of it you guys would love it :hyper:

If I were to buy this Kawai bass and put an Alembic logo on the headstock, would that be ok, too??

I guess the same reason that people want new basses reliced. ...... I can't figure it out. ...... People will buy reliced guitars because they are reliced, not because they're good instruments. ..... Nuff-said. ........ I had a fellow who did decals make me a custom BASSMICKEYD decal, using a Fender style font, that I installed on two of my basses. A custom fretless J-bass neck made by George at F-basses and a 63 P-bass that had it's headstock cut down to Telecaster early P-bass shape. .... It's fun to see people do a double take when they see it.

As long as the person who is doing it doesn't try to pass off their bass (or body, or neck, or whatever) as the real thing for monetary gain, then I don't have an issue with it.

If you want to fib to your bandmates, folks at a club, or your boy/girlfriend about your stringed instrument status - for whatever reason - have at it.

+1

I've never done it but it's no bad deal as long as you're not reselling the bass as a Fender.

Growing up in the 70's, when my one and only brand t-shirt couldn't be stitched anymore, I got my mom to un-sew the logo (nowadays these things are printed on) and sew it on a cheapo.

We couldn't afford to be trendy and when I got 4 stripe sneakers, I cut one the stripes off...

The only explanation I can think of is that people wanted Fender and couldn't afford it. That's why Squires and SXs end up with Fender decals.

Somehow I don't think people would put Fender on Lakland or Sadowsky.

Yep, it's all about $$$ and having a brand name or your nose pierced or living in a certain neighborhood means that you want to suck up to the person in front of you and belong to their 'clan'.

I believe the real issue is people with Squier MB's putting Ibanez decals on them...

I've never done this sort of thing myself but the only way I could see myself doing it is if it was an actual Fender with a replacement neck(Moses Graphite). I imagine a lot of folks do it with some of the better squiers so they can get into studios ;)

It's stupid to try and fool people, but if you have a Fender body with a Fender style replacement neck, why not?

If you change the pu's, do you take the Fender decal off?

I guess that's like if your your car gets in an accident and the hood or trunk gets replaced with plastic/fiberglass or after market parts you wouldn't put the logo back on to make it look like before? :hmm:

Fender Decals On None Fender Basses. That's wrong on so many levels. but IMO, when you peel away the layers of the onion, you'll find the real reason is to front or fake like you have a REAL Fender when you don't. Sort of like back in the day when school kids would walk around with a cell phone that wasn't turned on (remember those guys?). They were trying to be cool by faking like they had something that they really didn't and couldn't afford. Personally, If I built a really slamming bass from parts, I'd put my name on it, not Fenders.

WOW really a cell phone thats not on.....i remember the old school phones the big box u would carry around like in the late 80's...but using a phone thats not connected i funny.........then again i dont see how a fake 356 Porsche can cost 20,000.00 cheap fiberglass but then again its more of a tribute because a real one would be a whole lot more!!!!

donow why anyone would, but I am thinking of a Fender style "F" with "unk" after it for my custom painted JoBo5 w/ matching headstock. Lakland wont give me new stickers so I'll make my own! Just to trip folks out a bit. :)

J this is the "JIII-X" you hooked me up with years back. The one in the avatar. Nat finish on wood wasnt hi qual, so now it'll be BLACK currant pearl!

Funk Bass, made in Buffalo NY! :)
