Hi all, I've signed up hoping for some help with an issue I'm having. I'm not actually a bassist, I use a bass guitar seldomly in a home studio, so please excuse my ignorance.
I have a Fender Deluxe which I bought off a friend years ago, but don't know the model number or anything like that. It is connected to my mixer via a trusty DI box. Unfortunately I get a lot of noise when I turn up any of the volume/tone knobs (which are very confusing alone because they arent labelled).
A google search seems to show that a crackling noise is normal when you need to clean the pots. I have some Deoxit so that shouldn't be a problem if need be.
The problem is that in my case, it doesn't seem to be normal crackling (although there's some of that). When I turn the knobs, the volume will increase slightly, and then at a certain point (often with a pop) there will be a sudden large volume increase. With this, comes very loud background hiss/buzz. Below this point, there is no noise, but it is too quiet, and above this point, the signal is loud enough but it's very noisy.
I need to have the volume turned right up because anything below this point is not loud enough when I'm setting gain levels at the mixer. But as I say, as soon as the volume jumps to being loud enough, it's very noisy (and this noise is blatantly picked up in the recording).
Anyone have any idea what could be the problem here?
