Fender Elite P-bass. HELP ME FIND ONE!

hey folks, i have recently been struck with the urge to hunt down and play, and ultimately obtain a Fender Elite P-bass. For those of you not familiar, this was a bass made by fender from '83-85 (until CBS sold Fender), at which point the bass was never made again. there were a few versions, the most impressive of which features a walnut body and a maple neck with ebony fretboard.

the Elite P-bass i am trying to hunt down is alder with a maple neck/board, and features a P/P pickup configuration. P in the normal P position, and a P right next to the bridge. you can tell an Elite P by the white pickup covers that have no pole pieces exposed. i only know of two people who use one of these basses, and they sound amazing.

the issue is, they are super rare. i know they sell anywhere from 600-1200 dollars depending on condition and such, but i can't even find a good batch of pictures of this particular bass. Ebay is a bust, but i am sure there has to be a way to find one of these things. color is not an issue in this case. i would just like to get my hands on one.

anyone? suggestions? is it just luck to find one?

I had 4 ELite II's (now down to one), and I can attest that they are very well made basses. Not your typical P tone, but very capable of lots of different sounds. Many of the ones for sale are missing the fine tuners at the bridge. Not essential for operation, but they make the bass complete.

I love these basses! Very well made. The sound is very focused with the active pre (the pickups are passive - they're actually standard P pickups fully potted like Barts). If you can deal with a C profile neck (some people can't) these are great to play.

Keep an eye on ebay - they seem to come in bunches with dry spells in between. They aren't all that rare.

Here are my '83's. The black one is alder, the other is an ash Gold Elite II. I had custom guards made for both.

I'd be willing to sell mine but it has a rosewood fretboard. Three-color sunburst, alder, with an aftermarket tortoise-shell pickguard.

my lovely Fender Precision Elite II bass from 1983. Purchased 2nd hand ($1200) with some really nice mods (badass II bridge, pickup selectors etc...)
